Terry McGuire #1

Unethical Conduct

Rate this book
Corrupt senior officers, a murder, a rape and a flasher. Can DI Terry McGuire's day get any worse?

McGuire became a police officer to uphold the law and to protect those who cannot protect themselves. When he discovers a connection between a former friend and colleague and a body buried on a beach that appears to have been frozen for five years, McGuire knows there is only one course of action he can take.

With a murder, a rape and a flasher adding to McGuire's headache, is there a connection between his colleagues and the awful events unfolding? Can McGuire stand up for what he believes and bring the perpetrators to justice, whoever they may be?
"Authors, Arthur Cole and Nigel Williams have nearly fifty years of policing experience between them. If anyone knows what happens behind the closed doors of a police station it's these two." Editor.

This is the first book about DI Terry McGuire who is an all-round nice chap and not at all like the majority of fictional, broken detectives. So that was quite a pleasant change. Set in Wales, DI McGuire is tasked to investigate an allegation into corruption within his force. On top of that, a dead body is discovered on the beach and a flasher is exposing himself near the local caravan park.
So McGuire has a fair bit to deal with, but remains completely unflustered throughout.
Written by two former police officers, their experience shines through clearly in the depiction of the investigative procedures. The characters and the dialogue also seemed very authentic. At times, it actually felt as if I was listening to a memoir. My only minor criticism about the plot was that everything just slotted into place too easily. My second - again minor - niggle relates to the portrayal of female characters. They seemed to be typecast in the classic roles of supportive and nurturing. In future books, it would be nice to see a bit more suspense and perhaps the odd female character that doesn't fit that mould. However, as a first book and serving as an introduction to the series, it was pretty good.
The story is told from the first-person perspective of DI McGuire and Jake Urry's tone of voice fitted that character to a T. The narration definitely enhanced the story for me.
Overall, a short and very straightforward British police procedural, which kept me entertained and held my attention, but was rather undemanding. Proceeds of the book go to charity! A worthwhile short read/listen.

The review is for the audible edition narrated by Jake Urry.

Jake has one of those voices that hold your attention to the point where I think he could read out his shopping list and I would find it interesting. The book did have more to offer than a list of provisions. I haven't read anything by either author before but there was a definite feel of authenticity to the police characters and their language and it's no surprise that both authors are former police officers. This was fairly short with the narration lasting under 4 hours. DI Terry McGuire was a great character and I will probably read more of the series. My usual problem here with swearing as while it felt totally in character I just don't like to hear it narrated.

My thanks to Jake Urry for this audible copy of Unethical Conduct.

The good, the bad, and the exhibitionist. Good coppers abound everywhere, but there are always the few rotten ones that turn up eventually. It's taken a long time for this one arrogant beast to get close to getting caught even though a lot of coppers and street thugs knew but couldn't prove enough. His arrogance led to a body on the beach under peculiar circumstances but McGuire was able to bring him down. Now if only they could catch the flasher!
Excellent procedural despite the fact that everything happened more than five years ago making proof that much more difficult. Thanks be that everything was fitted into a reasonable length book or I would never have gotten to sleep.
Jake Urry is positively amazing as the voice of McGuire and all the others!

Good book with excellent narration.
I don't suppose I'd have read this book if I'd come across it in a book shop, the cover is not at all inspiring, however, I listened to this as an audiobook via Audible and that was a totally different experience. Jake Urry was the narrator and I loved his sultry drawl, which perfectly matched the characters.

The two authors have served many years in the police force, so when they write a police procedural about internal police corruption, it adds another dimension to a hidden vice, that we prefer to believe does not exist.

There are three aspects to DI Terry McGuire's inquiries - firstly a corruption case brought by some proven criminals who claimed that some of their offences had been planted on them by the police. Secondly, a dead body that had been dumped after spending five years in a freezer. And thirdly, a flasher who was stalking women in the local park.

As the investigation proceeds and evidence gradually reveals itself, I became more involved with Terry McGuire's character, though I didn't manage to keep all the villains in place in my brain. No matter, it was an excellent listen and I shall be searching out more from the narrator.

an enjoyable short story with a good pace easy to read chapters with a nice rhythm. at times I would have liked a little more detail and it did feel that life was a little easy with everything slotting into place in The investigation so easily! sets the scene well for more books featuring these characters...

"Sometimes the chase was the best part of the hunt."
This audio version of Unethical Conduct brings a wonderful partnership of book and narrator. Jake Urry's reading captures the character, world weary determination and ethical outlook of DI Terry McGuire, the main protagonist, from who's point of view most of the story is told. Mr.Urry's other individual voicings throughout are also superb, with gentle Welsh or regional accents present and each distinctively different. And he is pace perfect, slow and careful but relentless, just like Terry as he faces having to secretly investigate the truth of allegations brought against another recently retired copper by two old lags, whilst still dealing with the discovery of an unidentified body and a flasher seen running, naked, between the holiday caravans in his area.

This book has such a feeling of authenticity that it came as no surprise to learn, at the end, that it is written by two retired police officers, one of whom, at least, would have known the area well whilst the other spent time in Special Branch. The story is full of character and carefully investigation, of greed driven arrogance on the part of some of the players and of frustration found in the difficulties placed in the bringing to justice of villains.

This is a superb read for all police procedural fans who want to know what it really feels like. It has humour and excellent characterisations, too, further given life by the narration. A definite recommendation. I, personally, look forward to more.

It's disturbing to think that police officers would act like some of the ones in this book and yet the rest help to restore my faith in the profession. I think it's all the more disturbing because the authors worked as police so if anyone would know...

The characters are well crafted and come across as believable and either likable for the good police or reprehensible for the bad ones. The story is interesting and shows some of the investigative process, there's a fair bit of information in here and there's lots doing on, from twists in the main plot to lighthearted sidelines.

The narration was well done, the character voices were well done and the overall delivery is smooth, natural and well paced. There were a coupe of minor errors that weren't edited out, but this didn't have much effect of my enjoyment.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Uncaged Book Reviews:

This is a short read but it gets to the point straight away. It’s just a matter of getting the evidence to prove it. A dark fast paced and gritty book that sets up the character of Terry and his team quite well for book one. Book 1 to7 is out now and all proceeds of this book go to charity.

This was an absorbing detective story. I didn't warm to Terry McGuire at first, but found myself liking him more as the book went on. The story was very brisk, at times it felt too brisk. One minute I'm reading and then, it's over. I guess that's the sign of a good book. It felt far too short and I wanted more! On to buying book 2 now I suppose!

Initially I thought I wasn't enjoying this story, I felt that a lot of the book was quite superficial and didn't really dig deep into the characters but on reflection I found I did keep picking up my kindle to read more and it moved along at a good speed. I think the reason for a simple storyline was to introduce us to the characters as we begin a series and I am now looking forward to book 2.

Police procedural with rather too much emphasis on the procedure and two dimensional characters.

This is a quick, easy crime read. You know who the evil people are up front, but it's interesting to see the background on the evidence gathering to get them. I liked seeing the dressed down police work written by those who know. It was over before I expected but right on time for the story line.

Unethical Conduct
A very readable police procedural set in Wales and written by two retired officers, it is the story of an internal investigation of corruption. The narrative is well crafted. It is a short book so was over very quickly. It is the first in a series of 4 books and I will certainly read the others on the series.

Very enjoyable quick read. It is quite a short book, however it tells the story well. It felt so well written it could almost be a documentary. Would recommend this book to those who enjoy Police proceedurals.
