An interesting selection of Hawaiian folk tales. I have no idea how "accurate" they are, but I believe the author travelled to Hawaii and researched them. I definitely got the sense of the islands from these stories.

Czytanie tych opowiadań to czysta przyjemność. Przedstawione mity są barwne, fantazyjne i epickie. Zawierają wiele motywów obcych kulturze europejskiej, co dodawało im unikalnego, egzotycznego klimatu. Elementy kultury i krajobrazu Polinezji znajdują się w niemal każdym opowiadaniu, dzięki czemu bez problemu można się przenieść w tamten świat.
Po przeczytaniu legend hawajskich, wiem co robić, gdy spotkam niewidomą babkę piekącą banany.

"Bogini ognia"- 4/5 epicka opowieść o bogini ognia Pele; brutalnej i porywczej, ale przede wszystkim sprawczej;
"Siedem wielkich czynów Maui"- 3/5 trochę naciągana ta "wielkość" czynów Mauiego, ale przez swą egzotyczność opowieść wciąga;
"Menehuni"-4/5 ciekawe podania o tajemniczym, pracowitym plemieniu małych ludzi;
"O kanu Laki lub Raty i o tych, którzy w nim żeglowali"- 4/5 warto mieć człowieka, który puszcza latawce w swoim kanu, bo może się okazać czarownikiem, który pokona każdego morskiego potwora;
"Jak biały rekinek udał się w odwiedziny"- 2/5 xd ciekawie mają te rekiny;
"Chłopiec Puna i król rekinów"-4/5 opowieść o bardzo sprytnym chłopcu i bardzo głupim królu rekinów;

"Dziryt i huśtawka"- 3/5 miłosny mit przypominający ten o Orfeuszu i Eurydyce, ale w specyficznej hawajskiej odsłonie;
"Pływająca wyspa"- 4/5 wielowątkowa opowieść o tęsknocie;
"Córka króla krainy Kuaihelani"- 4/5 hawajski Kopciuszek;
"Kobieta z podmorskiej krainy Lalohana"- 3/5 krótka historia o bogini księżyca ;
"Hina, kobieta na księżycu"- 4/5 o pracowitej kobiecie, która wreszcie odnalazła spokój;
"Niheu i Kana- dwaj potężni bracia"-3/5 epickie przygody dwóch herosów;
"Poszukiwacz Aukele"-3/5 ma mocne strony, ale i słabsze, chaotyczne fragmenty;

A fine book for children but not as a guide to the mythology of Hawaii. The author explains in the introduction about how he has shortened, combined, and totally altered these myths to make them come out as folk tales. This has completely removed the grandeur of the poetry of the chants.

An interesting and fun collection of Hawaiian and Polynesian legends, where folklore and creation myths abound! There are rainbows to be found over every island and old hags roasting bananas at every crossroads and kites and swings and!

This book was a fun read. I didn't really care for the prose, even though their were some really great and funny turns of phrase (war skirts and scared laps included)and it kind of felt like the author ran out of material mid way through, because he kept telling the same story again and again.

Overall though, I enjoyed this book. I especially enjoyed learning about things like ku-kui nuts and the mythology of Hawaii. The nuances are fantastic and the literary devices rule. And you can just forget about all of that eldest business, that rules over fairy tales and folklore alike. In this book, the youngest inherits the 'universe' in every single story.

Look out for "The seven great deeds of Ma-ui" and the "Arrow and the Swing". They were my favorites.

A good retelling of a number of Polynesian legends. There's no particular poetry to this retelling - it's much more in the style of Lady Gregory than James Stephens. The stories are universal though.
