This is a great Christmas mystery for the kindergarden through 3rd. grade reader. Its strongest appeal will be to girls because the main characters are girls.
Bast the cat and Maximus the dog are a delight. "Bast is able to change shape and travel through time. I, (Maximus) on the other hand, cannot change shape, but I have other skills. I am able to travel long distances quickly, without tiring. I am able to carry large loads on my back and to see great distances and through many veils with my bionic eye." (p.55)
I loved it when Bast respoonded to Kimberly with the comment, "Well, if Santa is real, why can't trolls be real?" (p. 80)
The illustrations of Bast are amusing and add a flair to the story. I'm looking forward to reading the next two books in the series which will be called The Island and The Cave.
