Clara has had submissive fantasies all her adult life, but has never found anyone to make them come true. Now, as she approaches her thirtieth birthday, with everything else in her life going well, apart from relationships, she decides to take control of her destiny and seek out the experiences she craves to finally satisfy her curiosity. Turning to the Internet in the hope of arranging an anonymous liaison, for a few brief hours, with an alpha-male who might help her explore her secret yearning, she does not anticipate becoming involved with the handsome and uncompromising man who responds to her profile.
Daniel is an experienced Dominant, with his own reasons for avoiding emotional attachments. He engages with Clara on-line, and arranges to meet her, only in order to warn her of the danger she may be putting herself in, but finds himself drawn to the naïve young woman whose strange mix of beauty, sass, feminine vulnerability, and dogged determination, appeals to all his masculine senses, so that he finds himself unusually affected by her, and keen that she should accept his offer of training, and sign the contract that will make her his for six months.
Will Clara agree to Daniel’s terms? Can she meet his demands?
This first instalment finishes with a ‘happy for now’ ending, as Clara’s training begins… and she and Daniel embark on a journey of discovery that will test them both.

J.R. James is a British author who writes modern romantic fiction with an erotic twist and contemporary themes, exploring the Dominant/submissive dynamic in male/female relationships with varying levels of involvement in a BDSM lifestyle.
Her writing career began in 2013 with the publication of her ‘Love by Design’ trilogy, inspired by the new and expanding genre of erotic fiction with romance firmly at its core, and the growing mainstream popularity of the type of love stories that she had long enjoyed.
Her fiction has been described as ‘character-led’, and she admits to falling in love with her heroes and heroines while they ‘live’ with her and she gets beneath their skin to examine their motivations, as they navigate the often difficult path of love in search of their ‘happy ever after’.
She currently has seventeen published titles with lots more ‘work in progress’ ideas stored up in her imagination (and on her computer), and a whole cast of characters vying for attention to be her next romantic leads.
When she is not writing about the hot alpha-males who make the women in her books go weak at the knees, she loves reading across a wide range of genres, though erotic romance is definitely her first choice, and she is never happier than when curled up with a good book, or at her keyboard creating one.
I really enjoyed this book. Okay, the story is about an experienced dominant male and an inexperienced submissive female, the sort of story I genuinely like best (although forced submission and menage works for me as well), that's why I opted for this book in the first place.
The heroine, Clara, is a self-made businesswoman, smart and with quick wits: Daniel: "You will find yourself over my knee in a moment. No more warnings... and it won’t be for your enjoyment. Now, will you have any free time this week?” Clara: “What, for a spanking?” Very funny! She is successful in her life, but not happy with her love-life. She is also proud and stubborn. Because she liked a spanking from a teenage-boyfriend, she tries to find a dominant male on the internet. Her profile on 'Dominant Encounters' attracts the attention of Daniel, founder and monitor of this website.
Daniel is an experienced Dom, a strong, resolute, confident man. There is something in Daniel’s past - apparently involving a submissive - that makes him incapable of commitment to a relationship. But he is a good Dom. He gets really intrigued by Clara. Against the odds and his own wishes.
The story develops slowly. First we get to know Clara a bit. The book is written in the he/ she perspective, but sometimes there are thoughts of Clara or Daniel in it, so we find what they are thinking/ processing at that moment. Which I find very interesting. Although there is a (vanilla)sex-encounter in the first part of the book, the real BDSM-scenes start halfway through the book. In chapter 7 there is a true battle of wills, where Daniel helps Clara to embrace her submissive nature in a restaurant.
This isn't a short story, but I read it on a Sunday afternoon. I wasn't capable of putting the book down before finishing it completely. So you might say I enjoyed it :-) ... Thoroughly! The book has an open ending, but the next volume is announced. So I will try to be a good submissive and be patient ...
Clara is a woman that has decided to dabble in BDSM, only to have had bad "blind date" type experiences. When she joins a website called Dominant Encounters, she's hopeful that she'll finally meet an actual dom, and one that can take her where she wants to go. She meets Daniel, who has only agreed to meet her to explain how naive she is and to warn her away from a lifestyle she is absolutely clueless to. Having not had a full-time submissive for a long time, Daniel changes his mind and looks at Clara like a challenge he needs to handle. For him, teaching her how to truly submit will be a refreshing pleasure.
This was not like any of other books I've read with the dom/sub theme. Usually the sub in other books is actually submissive. Clara wants to be submissive, gets off on the idea of being a submissive, but is so freaking stubborn it is hilarious. Talk about your mouth getting you into trouble! I was cracking up at several of their interactions and just imagining Daniel smacking his forehead with the stuff coming out of his sub-to-be's mouth. When you get to the part about her hard limits in the beginning, you'll understand. Can't wait for the next book in the series!
**I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review**
i received this ARC through the BDSM group on Goodreads for an honest review.
Wow what a great story! Already i'm ready for Book 2 of the Series, just downloaded it. JR James has set it up very realistically, different websites out there for M/men & W/women looking for playmates in BDSM lifestyle are hit or miss, just as it's written. Clara has a need to figure out just what she wants, spanking only or more? Daniel owns Dominant Encounters website. He built it purposely so people will be safe, He vetttes E/everyone who has an Ad.
Clara knows she has needs, she's just not sure what they are. Daniel has an idea of what she needs, Him! He just needs her to sign Contract, then she is ALL His!!
If you like to read realistic stories about the BDSM lifestyle, this Series is it! Ok, i'm off to read next Book! my favorite part of reading an ARC is finding a New Author!!!! YAY!!!!!!
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were great and the only two reasons I didn't give it 5 starts was I felt there lacked some chemistry between the two and there was not much sex, and when there was it wasn't very descriptive/hot.
Not a fan. I had no connection with the main characters and didn't really feel a connection between them. This read more like a BDSM tutorial than a romance to me. Our h was strong one moment then weak as shit the next. Again not a fan,I won't continue on to the next book.
I liked this book a lot. Heavy BDSM but a nice romance along side if it has me antipasti get how the third book will go. Read this one, if it’s your genre!
Okay, so yes, you get the author's note "This first installment finishes with a ‘happy for now’ ending, as Clara’s training begins… and she and Daniel embark on a journey of discovery that will test them both." But SERIOUSLY?? LOL
I really loved the dynamics between Clara and Daniel. From his very sexy Dom side to how naïve and slightly clueless Clara truly is about the lifestyle. I am eagerly awaiting book two for sure, because where they left off....just...yeah, no where near enough to call it any kind of closing end. It was just getting good!! LOL But as far as the initial meeting of characters and bits of backstory, I truly loved it! :) So take a chance and sign up (oneclick) for Dominant Encounters....Daniel will be waiting! ;)
3.5 rounded up! Overall, this is a good book that is written well. I have to admit that I struggled with the pace ONLY because this is more for a reader who enjoys reading about a D/s relationship where the sub is completely new to the BDSM scene. I enjoy BDSM books, but I enjoy reading about characters that are not so new to the lifestyle. Or struggling with whether they want to be a part of it. This is definitely a book for a person who enjoys the initial encounter into the world. I did enjoy watching the two MC's connect and figure out their feelings for the other. This is part of a series, and because of the ending I will be reading part two.
