Es war einmal ein Igel

Rate this book

Franz Hohler currently lives in Zurich.
He is the author of many one-man shows and satirical programs for television and radio.He wrote theater pieces, children's books, stories and novels, and is equally loved and feared for his sharp, witted and pointy humor.
In 2002 he received the Kassel Literary Prize for Grotesque Humor.
One of his most famous works is the "Totemügerli". A "Swiss-German" story based upon a fabulous creature using word- creations, which do not exist.

A customer returned this book yesterday because his grand-daughter got it twice. It was still early and we usually don't have a lot of customers until 11 or 12 so I started reading it, poem by poem, in between taking care of customers.

The book caught me by surprise because the poems are funny, sometimes absurd, but also shockingly sad or morbid. With only a few lines Hohler can make you snort with laughter, either because he uses language in a fascinating way or lands a good joke, or because he's surprised you with unexpected turns. The illustrations are lovely.

I talked with my colleagues about the book and we thought about how the poems are almost more for adults than children, even though the target audience is placed between 0 to 4 years old. Children can surely get a laugh out of it, too. In some cases for the same reasons we adults laugh, in others for entirely different reasons we adults can't catch anymore because our brains have developed for far longer. This is one of those books you have to have heard as a child constantly and then revisit later to compare how you felt and what you remember as a child with how you perceive the poems as an adult.

A couple of my favourite poems:

Es war einmal ein Stern
Der hatte Kühe gern.

Es war so kalt im All
Und weit und breit kein Stall.

Er gab sich große Mühe
Und rief: "Kommt her, ihr Kühe!"

Es kamen aber keine
Und so blieb er alleine.

~~~~~~~
Es war einmal ein Hund
Der hatte keinen Mund
Er bellte mit den Pfoten.
Man hörte es bis nach Kloten.
~~~~~~~

Es war einmal ein Dachs
Der aß am liebsten Lachs.

Doch gab es das fast nie.
Da sprach er: "Irgendwie

Ist's ohne Lachs fast schöner."
Jetzt aß er nur noch Döner.

~~~~~~~
Es war einmal ein Bär
Der fand, er sei zu schwer.
Er nahm sich vor zu fasten
Und ging zum Vorratskasten.
Er brummte: "Das muss weg
Sonst hat es keinen Zweck."
Es schmeckte ihm alles sehr.
Jetzt wiegt er etwas mehr.
