LEGO and Star Wars team up for a beginner chapter book experience that takes some cheeky and entertaining liberties with R2-D2 lore.

This book is a playful, non-cannon collection of three droid-centric stories--taking place behind and between the scenes in episodes 4 and 5. It begins with a never mentioned detour that C-3PO and R2-D2 made on Tatooine before being sold to Luke’s uncle. Next is a snowy, Wampa-filled scenario on Hoth. And the last involves an improbable infiltration of a rebel starship by none other than Boba Fett.

It is a novel and interesting idea—inserting story into gaps in the existing Star Wars plot arch. This reviewer particularly enjoyed the effort at explaining why Droids weren’t allowed in the Cantina at Mos Eisley. (Spoiler: It involves bad Karaoke.) The artwork is bright and expressive, complimenting nearly every page without completely dominating. My 6 and 8 year old remained largely engaged and amused throughout.

Complete with a glossary of terms, this collection may serve to round out or introduce a number of actual Star Wars concepts and characters for younger fans, while also proving painless for even vaguely interested parents.

R2-D2 to the Rescue, written by Ace Landers, is a Science Fiction/Fantasy book written for the age group 8-11. This book gives background information about droids R2-D2 and C-3PO who are sent on dangreous missions and sometimes they have to fight and protect who they work for. I rated this story a four star because it was difficult at times to follow along with who was who in the story, I had to take notes and reread. The story overall was great once I did get the characters straight. For each chapter read I actually wanted more action to continue from chapter to chapter. I didn't want to read about a new adventure so soon in the book. The use of language was good I just didn't know what some terms meant, so I would have to look it up in the glossary in the back of the book. The illustrations and color were excellent and was very interesting to look at. I just didn't like the fact that Ihad to turn the page just to see the picture after the action was just described the page before. I would have loved to see the action and page together. The themes were interesting and went with each chapter. This book would be appealing to youth, it will keep their attention. I would use this book for entertainment purposes.

Synopsis: "This humorous and action-packed book features all of your favorite heroes and villains in three all-new original stories!"

My Review: I have always been a huge Star Wars fan, and when Munchkin started showing an interest you better believe I encouraged it. His favorite character is R2D2 so I had to pick this book up for him. It is along the lines of a Level 4 reader/ first chapter book and instead of chapters it is more of 3 short stories. They kind of coordinate with the original storyline of the movies, but not quite, they are more appropriate for children (the Lego storylines). The stories are funny and include the familiar and favorite characters from the movies, everything always seems to go wrong but R2D2 is always there to save the day. This is a fun book for those young Star Wars fans.
