A well written paranormal packed full of spirits and spiritualists. The story revolves around Jake, a psychic, and Eric who is haunted by the spirit of his dead lover Andrew. The many spells, tarot readings and Jake's shop gave an air of authenticity to the story and kept things interesting. I think that Gram was a little overbearing but she was the coven leader. The story had a nice floe ad Andrew wasn't all that bad.

“There really can be no peace without justice. There can be no justice without truth. And there can be no truth, unless someone rises up to tell you the truth.” ~ Louis Farrakhan

As a medium, Jake Parker, of 'Featherweight Heart' by Jillian Snyder, is used to people seeking answers from their dearly departed through him. When a customer, Eric Austin, comes in, Jake is able to connect him with his ex-lover, Andrew, but Eric wants nothing to do with him and runs out of Jake's shop. Jake is baffled, but there isn't much he can do unless Eric comes back and agrees to listen. Jake tries to put it out of his mind, thinking he'll probably never see Eric again. When Jake goes to a book signing with his nephew, he's pleasantly surprised to find that the featured author is none other than Eric, his “runaway” client. Jake wants to help Eric, especially since Andrew so desperately wants to reach him, but can't if Eric doesn't want to face it.

Jake is a natural like his grandmother, Gran, who is quite accomplished. Gran has taught Jake how to develop his gifts and recognize new ones as they come. Jake is clairvoyant; he receives his information in various ways, usually through dream-like visions which may or may not be literal. These messages come in the form of feelings, smells, sounds, and jumbled emotions, leaving him to figure them out. Andrew is determined to contact Eric and torments Jake to the point of distraction, even interfering with his relationship with Eric. The attraction Jake feels for Eric only confuses matters blurring his vision, making it even harder to figure out what the spirit is trying to convey. Jake isn't sure whether the spirit is angry about them being together or if something else is wrong. Knowing he's too involved, Jake calls upon his grandmother to help Eric and solve the mystery. The biggest problem they face is getting Eric to agree to listen.

Eric doesn't want to hear Andrew's regrets and apologies and thwarts any attempt by Jake or Gran to connect them. He just wants Andrew to leave him alone. He doesn't care that Andrew keeps trying to tell him that he's sorry for what he did or in anything else he has to say either. Andrew treated him so badly when he was alive that there's nothing he could possibly say that would ease the pain he caused. Eric is not interested at all in alleviating Andrew's guilt. If it's keeping Andrew from moving on, Eric feels it is Andrew's problem, not his. Eric simply refuses to forgive him. Even when Jake tries to explain that things are out of balance with Andrew hanging around which, among other things, directly affects the chances of him and Eric building a relationship together, Eric is still hesitant to listen to what Andrew has to say.

This is a great story which resonated with many of my personal interests concerning spiritual abilities. The story was very well-written and Jillian's knowledge of the subject is excellent. I loved Jake and his work ethics, his sincerity, and his aptitude for compassion. I enjoyed hearing about his gifts and how he uses different methods to obtain knowledge. Even though Eric was very stubborn about granting Andrew forgiveness, I understood how he could feel that way after Andrew hurt him so deeply. The concept of equilibrium in the universe is a difficult one to grasp, especially in manners involving deep feelings, but it is essential to maintain. Eric needed to forgive Andrew for his own sake as much as for Andrew's, thereby putting things back in order. If you like to read about spirituality, balance, forgiveness, and love, you may enjoy this story. Thanks, Jillian, for creating an entertaining space where I felt right at home.

4.5. review previously at BMBR.

Featherweight Heart is my first novel from Jillian Snyder, but it won't be my last. I truly enjoyed this cast of characters and this paranormal tale.

I like stories that are paranormal set in our world. I like that there is something different about Jake - his clairvoyancy - and I liked how this led the story. This is a romance at heart, set in a paranormal mystery. Eric and Jake wouldn't have met (or been thrown together) if it wasn't for Jake's ability. Jake can see Andrew, Eric's angry ex, and through this link the two formed a bond and a romance grew.
I mean, Jake would still have met Eric at the book signing, but the seeds of connection wouldn't have been sown already, waiting to be cultivated if it hadn't been for Andrew or the clairvoyancy.

The story wasn't overly complex, I wasn't sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next, but it was engaging and well written. I enjoyed Eric and Jake ass the MC's, but I can't mention this book without mentioning the wonderful secondary characters. Gram, Laney, Bobby, Jessie - they all added to the story, and more importantly, to understanding Jake.

I seem to be falling into this review abyss where I don't know what to say. Not because the story hasn't entertained me, but because, as enjoyable as the story is, without divulging story lines there is not a lot to say other than enjoyable. That isn't a negative though - for me, this is a four and a half heart read. Sometimes enjoyable means just that, and I'm able to sum up my feelings in one simple word. So there isn't a need for a TL;DR version, this author kept me reading with a good story and a lovely cast of characters. Oh, and before I go, I just want to say I loved the cover!

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

The first word in the published blurb for this book is “clairvoyant,” and I was sold at word one. Jake has a gift and his store allows people to craft their own brand of magic and he excels in personal readings. For as intriguing as this world is to me, the story itself is more basic in the realm of psychic ability and didn’t offer anything new or eye opening for me.

When Jake first meets Eric, he immediately has visions. Now Jake has been honing his skill most of his life as he was raised by his grandmother who is also psychic, and he has made a career out it. Yet he can’t understand the visions that he is now seeing. There is mention of him having a blind spot if the visions are connected to himself in any way, but, at least for me, they were fairly clear and straight forward.

There is little character building and we are only told the basics regarding each man. The book centers on the attraction between Jake and Eric, as well as Andrew’s ghost wanting to make amends to Eric, and this approach gave the feeling that there were three main characters. Jake and Eric have a fated mates story that worked in the sense they had great chemistry and there was a well crafted, gotta-have-you-now intensity. This, however, took over for them actually building a relationship outside of that.

Featherweight by Jillian Snyder was a spectacular book that I devoured from beginning to end. This book has put Ms. Snyder on my auto-buy list!

When Clairvoyant Jake Parker has a customer run out in the middle of a reading, he can’t seem to get him off of his mind, not to mention the spirit that he connected with right before the man ran out. By the fates of the spirits, his Gram and his friends, they will meet again, sooner rather than later.

Eric Austin needs answers, and is drawn into the Witching Well one evening, really not knowing what he needs. After Jake starts his reading, and touches on the very painful subject of Eric’s now dead lover, he bolts like a scared rabbit. Little does Eric know, none of this is under his control until he decides to let it all go.

The only person that can help him is Jake.

Well, what can I say? This book was amazing. Truly one of the best M/M paranormal books I have EVER read. I was literally consumed from the first chapter. Ms. Snyder captures the reader and won’t let go. With an excellent balance of mystery and sex, this book is perfect. I will actively seek out anything that Jillian Snyder writes and put it on my TBR list immediately.

I suggest you do the same.

Enjoyable romance with a ghostly element. Whilst I liked the main characters I wish that Gram had been in there a little more - loved her!

A new author to me and I enjoyed this spiritual romp into the occult.
It moves along quite well, there is no angst and whilst you get the odd whiff that something untoward may happen, it never does.
Jake is the clairvoyant, who along with his Gram and shop assistant Jesse help people deal with spirits and help spirits move on. I liked Jake's character and the rituals and feelings he had felt right.
Eric remains a bit of a mystery still and I'd like to have known how he felt when he was 'guided' toward Jake's shop - why, how.
Andrew had the potential to be malevolent but I'm glad the author stayed away from that, though I would have liked to learn a bit more of why he was so very closeted.
So overall, a nice (could be Halloween if needed) story

Unusually for me, I didn't make a lot of notes when I was reading this. Sometimes I make more highlights for great quotes that I do for actual thoughts or it's the other way around. This time, however, I just don't know what to say. I also have no idea what relevance the title has to the story, because there is no hint or reference to balancing the heart or the purity of a heart, within the story. It feels like an add on, to relate the psychic element to the weighting of a heart, just because the story involves a dead person.

~

The story wasn't a new favourite, but it wasn't awful either. It was just settled quite comfortably somewhere in the middle. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was Meh!, as though it wouldn't have mattered if I'd never read it, because I did enjoy parts of it. But I'm not sure I can go beyond “I liked it” or “It was nice”, if you understand what I mean?

We started with each character getting a full name introduction and almost an entire back history, in the first few chapters. Anyone who follows my reviews will know that's not my style, but I don't necessary take points off the story for that. It's a “style” of writing and I don't have a problem with it, but it's not my preference. At the same time, however, they were a lot of information dumps, especially in the first 20-25% of the story. Long explanations about the shop – what was on shelves, what they were used for etc, even when it wasn't important – as well as personality/personal history stories that didn't really have any place in the story.

Another problem that kind of bugged me is that I didn't ever feel connected to Jake or Eric, the way that I normally would with main characters. They were fine – there was nothing wrong with them and they were perfectly normal characters – but they didn't touch me or seem as relatable as I would generally find main characters.

For me, the most interesting characters in this story were the side characters. I wanted to know more about Jessie, the side-kick college psychic; Bobby, the fun loving, over dramatic pre-teen; Gram, the wacky old woman who reads fortune and futures. They all came across as more interesting than the main characters, which doesn't sit well with me. The MC's should have been my main focus, but I wasn't that bothered by their story. Maybe because the plot seemed a little obvious – I mean, it was clear that Jake was too close to Eric, that Andrew wasn't getting his message across and that everything would be fine in the end. There was no real tension or drama for me to worry about and maybe that's where the disconnect come into play.

Jake, as our MC and the only POV we have, is a decent guy, but he's not Hero material or even, I don't know, the MC I was expecting, maybe? For being a clairvoyant he was ridiculous obtuse about some things, which the author only explained away as being that he couldn't read his own life the way he could other people's and that it was a blind spot. Personally, this didn't fly. I mean, there were times when he did things with his 'gifts' that were for his own benefit and no one elses, but when it mattered, they didn't work?

I'll confess, I found myself desperate to take a break, to move on to do something else and even skim reading some of the info dumps, because I just wasn't getting into it. Even later into the story, I lacked interest, which is weird, because the whole premise sounded really exciting to me. I'd been expecting a mildly creepy romance that would be a perfect MM Halloween read. But I didn't get it.

It was a slow story that felt dragged out, with no excitement. Even the sex scenes were skimmed over – by the author this time, rather than me – leaving me wanting more and not getting it. I kind of feel that's the entire summary of my review. The only thing that made sense, weirdly, was the insta-love between the characters, because the explanation given actually worked for me and I don't have an aversion to it, even when it's not explained away like this.

But...yeah...this left me confused, wishing there was just that one thing more that would have perked it up. It was quite doom and gloom most of the time, with a few shining lights provided by the side characters and some sex scenes that didn't quite fit where they were placed. And that's how the whole thing went for me – something was off the entire way through the story, it didn't grab my attention and keep it, it was just a bit...safe.

Safe is the only word I can come up with to describe a story that was good, but not great, and also not completely awful either. I wish I could say I'd recommend it, but I'm not sure I would. I probably won't remember much about it, if I'm brutally honest.

~

FAVOURITE QUOTE

““It's all right,” Jake assured him but Eric shook his head.
“No, it's not. Because, last and most important, that's not why I asked you here.”
“Why did you ask me?”
“Well, it sure as hell wasn't to have a threesome with my dead ex,” he said with a roll of his eyes and Jake laughed.”

I always enjoy a book I learn something from. And this one, I learned several things, spirits, how to read them and what not. (of course it could all be made up, but sounds really plausible)

Jake meets Eric, instant connection. Problem is, Eric has someone that won’t let go, and Jake is torn between professional life an personal life.

Eric meets Jake, and all bets are off. He’s never felt like this before and he needs more.

This two make a great team, learning each other, learning the facts of the spirit(s) following Eric. And just not being so shy about dating in general. They both have problems to work through, and once they talk, are willing to sort them out.

The cast that surrounds them is also well done, from the kid Bobby, to Gram. All play important parts making the story flow and work. All the way to the end.
