Writers and readers of Science Fiction, take note. Chris Negelein is trying to show you something.

In “Strings Attached,” we meet a pair of con/heist artists by the names of Maeve and Montero. Our “heroes” are engaged in a scam-cum-burglary that involves corrupt officials, high religion, and a very large military. These are familiar elements in many stories. What makes this story unique is the mad, weird dimensional collision of a landscape that Negelein uses as the backdrop for his story. Mole Men and mysterious multi-armed masked commanders make what would otherwise be a traditional, but nevertheless highly enjoyable, heist story into a small wonder.

Authors are often admonished to “show, don’t tell,” and here is where Negelein is putting on a master class. “Strings Attached” rewards, and in some places demands, close reading, because the author is trusting you to pay attention, and rewarding the reader who does with a highly imaginative world. Skimmers are going to get caught flat-footed every now and again, because the story unfolds most of its exposition without a lot of yadda yadda.

There are one or two minor typo errors that do not detract from the reading experience, and it’s an outstanding story, especially for the price. Get this story now. You are 99 cents and about 30 minutes from an experience that will remind you what good speculative fiction can do, and why it’s worthwhile
