No One Since You

Rate this book
Carrie Waters doesn’t believe in love. Not since Jack Gavigan broke her heart and shattered her dreams. She left her small New England town, swearing never to return. But now she's back to sell her childhood home and put her grandmother's affairs in order. The problem is, Nana never mentioned having a dog. Not only that, but the unexpected animal is the size of a pony, and it seems determined to clean out her bank account so fast, she'll never get back to Texas. Especially when the dog she didn't expect keeps making people call the town's only animal control specialist she never wanted to see again, Officer Jack Gavigan.

Jack Gavigan
Jack hasn’t truly loved a woman since Carrie Waters stole his heart eighteen years earlier. But now she’s back and finally, he can explain to her why he left the senior prom on the arm of her best friend, Michelle. His and Michelle's daughter was born only nine months later, but still--there's more to the story, and Carrie needs to know. If only he could get her to listen.

This contemporary romantic and inspiring love story is at the end of the book. I have including a bonus collection as a gift at the beginning.

This guy married heroine's best friend three months after their breakup, I don't care what reasons there was but they both BETRAYED her. He had a normal physical relationship with his wife they raised the daughter very happily and I truly have no doubt that if she had not died they would have lived happily ever after! A few things really bothered me he told heroine(love of his life) that both he and his wife were glad that heroine went away because it gave them the chance to be wonderful parents....WTF? He is supposed to really love her but he actually THANKED her for leaving!!! Then towards the end he wishes heroine never came back and he actually didn't want to answer the phone when she called! He was all about protecting his promise to his dead wife and protecting his daughter but when I read his feelings of wanting the heroine to leave after all his avowal of love for her I was gobsmacked. He admitted he had good sex life with his wife that he was heartbroken when she died and they tried to have another child......yeah really sounded like he missed the heroine! He proved to me heroine was third best because all the love, respect and affection he had went to his wife and daughter. Heroine was stupid for pining after him because love he def wasn't pining for you!!

****Spoilers****

(And bonus spoilers in the comments as well! Enjoy!)

Alright, our two MCs are in luuuuurve and in their senior year of high school. The h has a super awesome BFF who gets along great with her boyfriend. Then on prom night she gives her boyfriend her virginity in the backseat of his car in the parking lot. (Eww but whatevs.) Then they as they're getting dressed they have a little tiff where he's upset that she won't choose a closer college and he loves her and doesn't want her to go and she's sorry but she'd accepted the scholarship before they were together and her grandma can't afford to send her to a local college and yada yada yada, he goes back inside the prom without her and she finishes straightening herself up and goes looking for him.

She stumbles upon this:

"The boy was leaning against the wall, his arm over the girl's head in a protective, guarding way. She was leaning with her back against the wall; her face was buried in his chest. She appeared to be crying. “Why? Why?” the girl cried. “Shhh. Someone will hear you,” the boy said. Carrie felt like she'd been punched in the gut. It was Jack. Her Jack. And... Michelle? She started forward, but their next words stopped her. “But why, Jack? Why the parking lot? Why now?” Michelle sobbed, big hiccupping cries that sounded as if her heart had been broken. “I can't go back in there, Jack. I can't. Not now. Not after... the parking lot. Not like this. Everyone will know.” “I know, Becks, I know. Shhh...” He bent his head to hers, pressed his forehead against hers. “It'll be all right. Everything will be okay. I'll take care of you. I'll take care of everything. I love you, you know.” He pressed a gentle kiss to her cheek. Carrie gasped. They lifted their heads to stare at her. Jack started."

Okay yeah, that just looks bad all around. If you put yourself in the h's shoes, she's of course under the impression that she's stumbled upon her boyfriend comforting her BFF because she saw them fucking in the school parking lot and is hurt and jealous. Then you hear him tell the BFF he loves her and will take care of her which of course leads you to believe they've had something going on behind your back and that's why the BFF is so upset and he's sorry she's hurt.

(Spoiler: he's comforting the BFF because she was just raped by some asshole in that same parking lot. He means it when he says he loves her but only as a friend.)

So yes, this is an epic misunderstanding and the h understandably runs off and he and the BFF "try repeatedly" to let her know that it wasn't what it looks like. I'm sorry, when they were at her door begging her grandmother to let them see her it never occurred to either of them to simply call out, "I WAS COMFORTING HER BECAUSE SHE HAD JUST BEEN RAPED IN THE PARKING LOT."

The h would have then been all oh em gee, my bad. Wow are you okay, BFF? I'm sorry I didn't listen to to ya'll's explanation.

But no, she leaves for college and instead of continuing to try and figure out a way to make her understand what she saw (hell, tell the fucking nosy grandmother! What the hell have you got to lose??) he just says welp, I guess that's that. Dang, the BFF is pregnant from the rape? Well the love of my life won't take my calls so I guess I'll marry her poor best friend. (Like, LEGIT marry her as in they sleep together and love as true husband and wife.)

It makes ZERO sense that he would do this or that the BFF would be on board with it. Why on earth would he feel that much of an obligation to the love of his life's best friend?? And as lonely as the prospect of being a young single mother is and as scared as she would be that it would get out that her daughter was the product of rape, you actually expect me to believe the BFF would be okay with being with a man that she knows will always be in love another woman? A woman who she claims to care about hurting?! I mean I know this is fiction but coooooome ON!

Jesus, help the poor woman out, sure! Maybe be like, an honorary uncle to the kid while figuring out a way to get the h back? Sure! Hell mayyyyybe even marry her and pretend the kid is his so the rapist doesn't try any thing but make it a marriage in name only! Then maybe they can divorce a year later and he can keep up the facade that he's the child's father so she doesn't get labeled as a rapist's kid. I mean they get along and are friends so it's not like the divorce would traumatize the little girl. But don't have them fuck and be all lovey dovey and content when their entire defense before this was that they didn't like each other like that! You just went and did exactly what the fuck she mistakenly thought you did in the first place! Dumb asses!

If the BFF hadn't died they would STILL BE MARRIED AND SLEEPING TOGETHER. Then where would this precious story be? Couldn't figure out how that would work since it would seem callous to have them be married all that time just to have him dump her when the h gets back to town so you kill her off? Pfffffft.

Sell this plot to the sanitation department, because it's fucking GARBAGE.

I feel bad.... I know the storyline the hero was supposed to redeem because of his "heroic" deed.... the heroine I thought was made to feel guilty when in the end it turned out exactly as she thought.

SPOILERS
maybe

Carrie was in love with her male best friend Jack , they were a couple and very close to her female best friend Michelle. The night she lost her virginity to him, they had a spat over her decision to go away to college and he sorta stormed off and left her alone in the car to get herself back together (gallant really) when she finally finds him in the school (it was prom) he is holding her bff in his arms and he is telling her that he "loves her". when they see her standing there they try to explain.... she refuses to listen and she leaves town. They however are so devoted to their friend that within 3 months they go ahead and get married, have a kid and seem to have a pretty decent life until she gets cancer and dies.

Now we as the reader I think are supposed to feel as bad as the heroine does when she finds out what actually occurred....but I do not... I am sorry the "event" happened but that in NO way would I ever forgive my bf and bff getting married for any reason while both pretending to have EVER loved me. I did not forgive the hero nor her friend... more so because they both betrayed her if not in the way she thought, they did make her look a fool, they did eventually get married and "forgot" her on their merry way. His "always loving her was BS" I found it was merly horny 17 year old boy vibe that he channeled when she returned.

I just never forgave Jack, he was an ass, he wanted to be a hero to everyone BUT the woman he "loved"... the only reason that he remotely became heroic was he accidentally was at the right place to save Carrie from the man who raped his wife or at least she gave him the credit..actually the dog saved her...he as usual was just there. I wanted Carrie to grab the dog and head back to Texas... Texas is full of cowboys ...why the hell waste her time on a man who dissed her more than once, cheated on her and broke her heart for WHATEVER reason.

I am unforgiving, sexual assault is not a reason to get married, neither is pregnancy I realize that even 18 years back it wasn't. Liked the book, hated the hero.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!

I liked the blurb and this story had potential, but as I kept reading, it just transformed into something a bit unrealistic, and to be quite frank - plain stupid.
A guy leaves his girlfriend (who is supposed to be "the one") so he can protect her best friend and eventually ends up marrying her and claims her child as his? Come on!
Are you kidding me?
Now, fast forward eighteen years, the guy is still very much in love with the heroine, and after seeing her for the first time since their prom night, he decides to win her back?! Really?

But wait... here comes the best part... she apologises to him!
Say what?!

Thank God this was a short read. Writing was okay, and that is the only reason I gave it a two star rating.
I like second chance romance novels, but this one just didn't do it for me.

Horrible. Save your time. It's not worth reading for free!

Wow. I don't mean to be rude but this book was horrible. Just awful and I absolutely cannot recommend it. I was angry that I took the time to try to get through it. Hated the story line. The man was spineless and definitely did not do what was right for the woman he was in love with and she in love with him. To go and marry her best friend and damn-near destroy her. Sickening!

He loves her so much he married her best friend? He loved her soooo much he never tracked her down at college and made her listen? He loved her so much he had an 11 year marriage to her best friend who he admitted having sex with during the marriage and raised her daughter with her? No, that's bullshit. You don't just jump into. Marriage with a woman who's pregnant because you want to protect her and totally destroy the woman you claim to love by doing that. Wtf is wrong with you??? That's not your job. She's not your girlfriend. I realize she was raped but she's your girlfriends best friend. Your responsibility was to your girlfriend you say you love, not the friend. And you just couldn't forget her all these years but you let her go so easily. Flipping joke. I would never have taken him back ever! And what the hell with her friend Michele. She was so selfish she marries her best friends boyfriend all the while knowing he loves her but not caring because she was more concerned with how people viewed her. So she agrees to ruin all their lives by getting married to him. They all made me sick. I would never forgive any of them.

I would've been royally pissed to have wasted my time with a plot like that. I agree, screw that "noble" gesture. You don't hook up with your bestie's man. He's an @$$hole for thinking that was the solution to her "situation".

DNF. Contemporary Inspirational Romantic Love Romance? I'm sorry but I had a 10 minute laugh after reading that. I don't know what possessed me to get this book -- the blurb itself made me feel annoyed with the Hero. But I wanted to see how the Hero got out of this one you know?

Answer: He got out of it easily. Seriously! Don't waste your time reading this if you're not into second chance romance where the Hero royally screwed up and got into the heroine's good graces in two seconds flat.

This book also sounds like a horribly written fanfiction. It's very amateurish. And I didn't feel like the characters were acting genuinely and realistically. Basically everything's awful. Sorry to say.

This book was brought to my attention again due to a "like" (lol, I'm too old for social media and I'm not that old). When I originally reviewed this I hadn't really thought through WHY I like cheating hero romance. Now I like the emotional, well written romance that gives me a big gut feeling, rage or whatever. It doesn't have to be morally correct or even what I would want in real life. I just want that gut punch and this gave good punch. But everything below is still something that I believe. I don't believe their happy ending unless the hero does more, but I don't have to. The heroine does and she seems pretty happy with what she got. So this is a long winded way of saying I'm raising to 4 stars bc, well, gut punch and all that.

9/16
The writing wasn't bad, but due to things the hero does and says you don't believe in their HEA. Also, for a heroine not to have moved on even though more than a decade has passed?

No one Since You by Claire Hewitt was an enjoyable book. There were secrets that had never been shared and those secrets had caused Carrie's heart to be broken when she was seventeen. The beginning of the book allows you to know that Carrie suffered from a broken heart and did not want to be back in Rhode Island for fear that she would come in contact with Jack.

Jack was on the canine division of the police force and when he saw a horse in a car, he felt the need to pull it over. This is where things start coming together for Jack and Carrie.

The story had some hilarious parts because of the dog Ellie. She is a huge dog that can wreak havoc in a heartbeat. She is a loving dog, but she is mischievous. She really added to the story a lot.

There are important characters that come out throughout the book and they are well crafted and very likable in some cases and very disliked in the other case. This is a good book. Jack had a very good heart, in some ways too good. He was very likable and a good person.

OMG what in the hell have I just read? This was the most ridiculous story, totally unbelievable in every way. How could the heroine even contemplate forgiveness of a double betrayal. They were both 36 but behaved more like 16 year olds. A talking dog, crazy deceased grandma, non existent dog kennels, rape, incest, I mean really, does the author think us readers are that stupid. I have given just 1☆ and that is being generous. My advice is don't bother with this book at all!!!

WHY IS THE AUTHOR’S NAME MISSPELLED ON THE COVER???

Another book where the h couldn’t move on from the H for 18 years while he’s married to her BFF. It’s so poorly written. I can’t believe I worked so hard to track a copy down. I should have believed the other reviews.

Check out Orange’s review for better deets.

This deserves no more of my words.

Snail mail anyone?

I don’t blame carrie’s reaction back in high school. But it just seems that no one tried to right the wrong very hard-Michelle and Jack. Especially the love of his life and her bff. And then said couple tried to be a “real” couple after the fact? Might as well have cheated anyway. If the situation between bff and H didn’t end the way it did, would there still be a reconciliation? Just seems that h just keeps getting the short end.

The story line had promises that it did not keep. He is caught, after having sex with his girlfriend, telling her bf that he loved her, the bf. Carrie leaves and doesn't go back for over eighteen years. Basically after her grandmother dies. Now I did love the dog, Ellie, and the mischief she got into. Claire Hewitt had ample opportunity to take this story line and take it from so so to awesome. But she didn't. There are stories she gave free to read here. In the front of the book. I just went straight to the story listed.also the cover just didn't go with that story. Jack was a police captain not a beard was mentioned. And the title lied, he did have a 'normal' relation with his wife. The woman he married after Carrie left.

This was not a good book at all!! The story was frustrating, the characters were frustrating and even the damn dog was frustrating!...funny but frustrating. It was a very short read so I was very thankful for that. I just couldn't believe that the hero would marry the best friend, even for that reason! There are other options!! And the whole push and pull with the H/H was extremely boring and redundant. I just couldn't like this book no matter how much I tried. Overall this was a bad read.
