Adab as-Salat by Imam Khomeni is a wonderful book that focuses on the interior and cordial disciplines of Salat. I would label this book as "a must read", mainly because Salat is the building block of both worlds; it is also well known that our deeds are accepted if our salat is accepted. Salat improves our character as well, Quran says in 29:45, "Indeed the prayer prevents indecencies and wrongs". If anyone is looking to improve his character and Salat, this book is for you. There is also an interesting chapter on the recitation of Quran where Imam Khomeni has eloquently touched upon the importance of reciting Quran beyond the purpose of gaining rewards. At one point he states: "The fact that our advantage from this great Book is quite small is because we usually do not take it to be a book of teaching and education. We recite the Qur'an just for its reward. So, we pay attention only to our intonation when reciting it. We want our recitation to be perfect and correct so as to obtain its reward, and then we stop at that and feel satisfied with it. Thus, we spend some forty years reciting the Qur'an without being benefited by it, except the reward for reciting it." I personally enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot out from it.
Don't want to disparage anyone who has benefited from this book, but honestly this wasn't a book I enjoyed.
I had read Khomeini's "On Islamic Government" a little while earlier and I disliked it for its scatterbrain and seemingly irrelevant arguments. I thought maybe I was being too critical since I likely have a different political disposition. Yet I find myself with the same complaints when reading this work on prayer, a topic I have no prior disposition and will afford much leniency.
One thing that particularly irritated me was the "fake humility" you sometimes see with religious folk. He would often say something like "I will not delve into X mystical subject, since I am not pious enough and anyways this book is for a general audience" but nonetheless mentions it - often poorly, leaving you more confused. This is in marked contrast with Allameh Tabatabaei, who gives any topic he mentions proper care, and evidentially does not place the optics of his work above it's substance.
Its been a while since I read a good book. Well, a fantastic one I may presume. "Adab As Salat" by Imam Alkhomeini is just that great book that encourages one to be reluctant towards this worldly life and focus his moral compass in one way, the hereafter. It's spiritual rejuvenation as well as its detailed eloquence thrive on Khomeini's Mystical personage, courage, sagacity and foresight. It gives a person an inside depth on how to live a happy, austere life. Free from greed, envy and carnal desires. Khomeini emphasizes deeply on the source of strength, valour and honor, which is a human beings connection with the divine and most perfect being, our Almighty and Glorious God. Conversely he talks about the source of misery and vanquish, which is having an overly attached relationship with this transient world, a garment veiling the eternal splendor.
200 pages in and I'm galvanized, I still haven't finished reading the book but felt the need to write this review..
