Some parts drag a bit. The descriptions of training & combat are superb. I also liked how General Chatterton included combat descriptions from other soldiers fighting in the same battles. He succeeded in recognizing other brave soldiers and insuring that his autobiography was not a self serving monologue telling us how great George Chatterton thought George Chatterton was. He instead comes across as someone who was probably a terrific mate & leader.
An excellent read for serious lovers of WW2 history.
WW2 never ceases to amaze me. So many boys and men from many nations performing tremendous acts. George Chatterton had quite the Army career from RAF pilot in fighter command to British Army Soldier to British Army Aircrew Glider pilot. He even got to be a Colonel in the US Army! You’ll have to read his memoir to understand how! Great eye-opening experience. I enjoyed his memoir.
I slightly enjoyed hearing this hard to find book on the “We have ways of MakingYou Talk” podcast. Certainly only for hardcore WW2 lovers, it gives the most detailed account of the glider squadrons that I have ever seen. That being said, it is a LOT about gliders, so if this isn’t a passion I’d skip it.
