Pagan Portals - Herbs of the Sun, Moon and Planets combines herbalism with astrology and explains how the ancient herbalists like Culpeper assigned specific herbs to planetary rulers. Various characteristics were used to decide what planet ruled particular herbs. Mars is the God of War and herbs that have this planet as their ruler display aggressive properties and appearance, such as thorns or red berries or sap. Dragon trees have red resin known as Dragon's Blood. The book is divided into sections for each group of herbs. So there are seven divisions for herbs of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn, each containing seven herbs. Herbs of the Sun, Moon and Planets will be essential reading for herbalists and gardeners, and will also appeal to those with a general interest in the occult and astrology.
Born in Cardiff, South Wales, I lived there until the end of 2004 when I relocated to Tenerife, which is where I stayed until 2014 when I moved again to Portugal. I am an author, journalist, freelance writer, singer-songwriter, poet, public speaker and naturalist. In 1998, I was a columnist for Big Issue Cymru and the magazine dubbed me the Bard of Ely, because I was living in the Ely suburb of Cardiff and making reference to my writings, music and performance. The title became a stage name I used and I am commonly known by this moniker. I have written for many publications, including Kindred Spirit, Prediction, Permaculture, Living Tenerife, Welsh Coastal Life, National Federation of Occupational Pensioners and Mediterranean Gardening and Outdoor Living magazines, and the Tenerife News, Tenerife Sun and Tenerife Weekly newspapers. I am the author of four books published by Moon Books - Herbs of the Northern Shaman, and Herbs of the Sun, Moon and Planets, Herbs of the Southern Shaman and Saving Mother Ocean. As a singer-songwriter I have performed at the Glastonbury and Green Man festivals, as well as being an MC for the Glastonbury Avalon Stage in 2002 and 2003. I have appeared on television many times in British TV programmes, as a guest speaker and as a musician. In 1998, I worked as a presenter for two series of the magazine In Full View on BBC Choice. I am in the film Savages in Foreign Lands, directed by Raphael Biss.
Although very interesting, the book is quite brief. I would have liked there to be more herbs included, preferably everyday, "useable" herbs, as opposed to the overwhelming number of toxic and poisonous herbs described.
