About the author

Margaret Hillert has written over 80 books for children who are just learning to read. Her books have been translated into many languages and have helped children throughout the world learn to read. She first started writing poetry as a child and has continued to write for children and adults throughout her life. As a first grade teacher, Margaret realized that the books available for students just learning to read were beyond their comprehension. She then began to write her easy readers and poetry for children. Her first collection of poetry Farther Than Far was published in 1969. Her many awards include the Chicago Children's Reading Round Table Annual Award for outstanding contributions to the field of children's literature. Other honors include the David W. Longe Prize and the Michigan Bookwoman of the Year Award. A teacher for 34 years, she is now retired and lives in Michigan where she continues to write stories and poetry.

Some miniature golf courses are pretty kitchy, but I've never seen one where a neon green dragon was there, playing along with his human family. Yet smehow, as always, Margaret Hillert makes this adventure seem plausible.

Learning mini-golf can be summarized so deftly, at least by this author. At one point, the boy decrees:

"I put the ball in

Oh boy

And there's Dear Dragon by his boy's side, dancing with glee.

FIVE STARS AGAIN

Because these books present such a lovely view of life, plus there's all the reading practice. This story made use of only 51 different words.

Linguistically and pedagogically, readers had a new sport for their mouths and their ears and their eyes: Syllabification. Yay!

I read this book tonight to Julianna tonight. She was tired after a fun birthday party so I read her 2 books tonight. This is an easier reader book. She remembered us playing mini golf 1st time me & her awhile ago. She gives this book 5 stars. Cute short book.
