I'm a huge Sarah Rayner fan, always happy to read anything that she has written. I really like the Making Friends with Anxiety colouring book, so was keen to give this book a try.
I'm not hugely creative, actually that's a bit of an understatement. The surge in popularity in adult colouring books has given me the opportunity to discover my inner creative self, so I'm keen to try other things. The suggestions in this book range from the pretty obvious (colouring) to the unusual (wood whittling). Some I won't try, but others I'm really keen to do (pebble painting). Each activity comes with clear and simple instructions, taking you step by step through what you have to do. Sometimes that isn't necessary, but other times it is very helpful. The book also has links to other resources which is useful.
There are many illustrations throughout the book, some are examples of colourings from the Making Friends with Anxiety colouring book. Many are by Jules and they help to add a brightness to the book. This means that to enjoy this ebook to the full you need to be reading it on something that is in colour, so a tablet or computer, not a kindle paperwhite for example. It would be a shame to miss out on the wonderful pictures. There are also pictures by Jules of the creative activities being suggested, I think I'd rather that some of these were photos.
The book does rehash a lot of what you will have read before if you've already read Sarah's anxiety books. The Making Friends with Anxiety Facebook page is also referenced frequently, which was a bit annoying. After a few mentions I'm sure that 'our facebook group' would have been enough.
If you struggle with anxiety then I'm sure that you will get something out of this book. Unless you're really keen to try other creative activities I'd probably suggest starting with the Making Friends with Anxiety colouring book.
I was given a copy of Making Friends with Anxiety: 10 easy creative activities that anyone can do to reduce stress by Sarah Rayner in return for an honest review.
I had to share this fantastic craft book with you as I think it is brilliant! I first heard of Sarah Rayner when reading her book One Moment, One Morning. I am a big fan of her novels and was amazed to come across her book Making Friends with Anxiety last year. As someone who has had a lifelong battle with anxiety this book was brilliant and really helpful in understanding my anxiety and learning to cope with it without thinking I am nuts!! Since then I have also found her support group on Facebook as well as her colouring book that she has created along with Jules Miller. I have found it really therapeutic and have loved having a distraction both from my CFS as well as anxiety.
This craft book is fantastic too. It is jam packed with lots of ideas such as gardening (which I am learning to love), baking, collage, needlework and other more original ideas such as whittling and pebble painting. But this is more than just a book of ideas, it is also crammed full of information, hints and tips on living with and overcoming anxiety. It is worded in a way that anyone can understand and relate to, and the tips are not only from Sarah but also real people who have shared their experiences and what has worked for them and can help reassure us all.
I highly recommend this book for both ideas on crafty stuff, even for those who don't have anxiety. But to me it is an invaluable support in battling anxiety and having a life I love.
