Dominique was a product of a broken home. With a mother who hated her very existence, and a father who was locked away in prison for the attempted murder of her mother; she just couldn’t catch a break. With a stressful home life, Dominique's only ray of sunshine is her boyfriend, Kaleb. As teens the duo are madly in love, with plans to marry and raise a family together. That is until Kaleb unintentionally breaks her heart. Dominique is crushed, and does the only thing she can think of; and that is to leave. Kaleb realizes that he’s messed up when Dominique moves away and goes off to college; leaving behind no way to contact her.
After a few years Kaleb eventually accepts the fact that Dominique is gone forever. By then he has his life on track, and is now a very successful business man with the world at his fingertips. A chance encounter reconnects the two ex-lovers, and Kaleb sees it as a chance to right his wrongdoings, and finally be with the one who captured his heart all those years ago. There’s one problem; not only is Dominique engaged to marry another man, but she is also the mother of his son. To make matters worse, Kaleb himself is involved with a woman who loves him unconditionally.
Although faced with a sticky situation, Kaleb refuses to allow Dominique to slip away again. He vows to get her back at any cost; even if it means destroying a home that Dominique doesn't know is damaged to begin with. Will these lovers reconnect, or will they realize that their ships have passed?

Wow. No wonder Cachet one of my favorite authors. That book was so good!!!! This book pulled me in from the very beginning. Dominique had a very rough life with her no good mother. Kaleb was so perfect until that one night and he thought he lost Dominique forever. Dominique has moved on and reacquainted with Kaleb years later only to find out she still loves him. I love Kaleb and Dominique together. And lord knows Shanice is the definition of ratchet. This book was so good. I cant wait for part 2.
This “book” is garbage. If it were a movie, it’d be R. Kelly’s sex tape. If it were a food, it’d be unwashed chitlins.
I’m assuming all the four- and five-star reviews were written by people who are used to reading this type of stuff, because there is no other excuse for the high rating this “book” has. When I picked up this title my expectations of this were so low you’d have to dig to find them. Now I realize having expectations in the first place was overly generous of me. Let’s discuss:
1. The characters are all terrible. There isn’t a single redeeming or interesting character in this collection of assholes.
Monique, the mother, is written to be so evil that it’s comedic. You can’t take anything she says as a threat because it’s so damn over the top. Give the woman a mustache to twirl; it’d be just a subtle.
The father, Jessie, is a wife beater and an abuser that the author inexplicably tries to portray as sympathetic. (She also writes his name using the feminine spelling. It’s distracting. I keep picturing Jessie from Toy Story 2.) The narration describes how “loving and kind” he is in the same paragraph that describes how he beat his wife so badly he got sent to jail for it. Captain Save-A-Hoe, he ain’t.
The main character is so bland I forgot her name and I don’t feel like looking it up. She basically exists to suffer. The mother beats up on her and apparently no one else in her life cares. I understand. I really didn't care, either. Other than that, there is nothing to her. You could swap this character out with a Bop It! and nothing in the story would change.
(Actually, one defining character trait is her annoying habit of reacting inappropriately to things. There’s a scene where her father tells her that as soon as she graduates high school she can escape her abusive mother. In response she “giggles” and says “I know. I can’t wait.” Bitch, you two aren’t talking about a trip to Cancun before you head off to college. You’re trying to get away from the woman who beats your ass on a regular basis. You sure as hell shouldn’t be giggling and you should have stronger feelings than “I can’t wait.” Stuff like this frustrates the hell out of me. Anyone with a basic understanding of words and how they are used would have caught how poorly phrased this was.)
Kaleb, the “love” interest, is also inexplicably written to be sympathetic. Surprise! He’s also a jerk. If this “book” were made into a movie, he'd be played by Chris Brown. He's just a disgusting human being who is completely unaware of how trashy he is.
There are a few other side characters with dumb names: the MC's grandmother who never calls Child Protective Services, a whole bunch of siblings who wouldn't exist if Monique and Jessie's dumb asses knew how to use birth control and a bunch of other "romantic" interests. They're all assholes or boring. Or, in the case of Deondre (WTF is up with the spelling of these names?!) boring assholes.
2. The story doesn’t know what the hell it’s doing.
Reading this is like trying to climb a hill while hip-deep in mud. For every step you take forward, you slide two to three inches back. I read 18 percent of this “story” before quitting and just skimming the rest and I don’t think I missed much.
The plot can never move forward because the narration keeps getting stuck on unnecessary flashbacks or stupid tangents. For example, in the prologue a character wastes everyone’s time with a rant about Instagram that came straight from 2011. Instagram has nothing to do with this story. No one discovers they’re being cheated on through Instagram. We don’t even know if all the of the characters even have Instagram accounts. But we have to sit here and read this unoriginal tirade about fake people on social media.
And that’s just one example. Every time a new character is introduced we have to read their entire back story, vital statistics, credit history and on and on and on and on. WHO CARES?? Stick to what’s relevant to the plot! I don’t need to know that Kenya worked as a orthopedic nurse for 30 years before having to quit to take care of little JoJo and his muscular dystrophy. IF IT DOESN’T IMPACT THE PLOT, LEAVE IT OUT! Which takes us to …
3. No one who produced this “book” knew anything about writing/editing/proofreading Calling this jumbled mess of nonsense a “book” is an insult to books. It’s really just a jumble of thoughts slapped together and posted on Amazon with a .99-cent sticker. (Which is still .98 cents more than what it’s worth.) No thought was put into this, and it’s hella ballsy of the publishing house (which claims to be “the biggest digital publisher of African-American fiction” … Sure, Jan) to present this as a finished product. If they're doing that well, they need to take some of that money and hire some editors.
(FYI, I am available and can provide those services. I have degree in journalism and nearly 10 years of professional editing experience. When y'all are ready to accept some help, let me know and we can discuss prices.)
The story is unorganized and follows no coherent structure. It’s like the author just wrote scenes as they came to her. The editing is non-existent. No one who looked at this knew what a comma was or how to properly use one. Words are frequently misspelled or misused (“your” vs. “you’re”, incorrect tenses, etc.) Most of the prose is just long, tedious blocks of exposition with a few corny lines of dialogue thrown in. “Show, don’t tell,” is the most basic, cliché rule of writing and this story is a master class in why it's so important.
4. It's just ... disgusting When things are shown to us, it's usually described using the most unpleasant, repugnant imagery possible. The food sounds disgusting, the environment sounds dirty and everyone sounds like they need to take a bath. It's just gross.
Oh, yeah. This book has sex scenes. They are as squick and unsexy as you can imagine. I'm not a prude. I have no problem reading sex acts. But the author has to know how to write them, otherwise they are just repulsive. Here's a pro-tip: Focus less on the fluids and more on the characters' feelings/emotions. Also, don't ever use the word "creamy center" unless you're talking about a Twinkie.
That’s I have to say about this ... this mess. It was waste of time. It makes me embarrassed to be black. I feel dumber reading about these characters.
Roasting it was the most enjoyable thing about this title, so I’ll give it that. I picked it up to review in a podcast I co-host and will have to relive its terribleness all over again. After that, I’m deleting this shit from my Kindle. I’m leaving crap like this back in 2016 where it belongs.
If I was new this this genre of books I probably would have seriously enjoyed this book, but the fact that I have read about 8 books with similar story lines in the past two weeks is what is causing me to pause on this one.
I am pretty sure there will be a part two which is always causing the pause. Not that I have anything against series... well that isn't actually true but anywho I just don't want to be that invested. I would like to read one fully completed Urban book.... not in the mood for part 2,3,4,5 etc.
Now if you are in the mood for some interesting drama with a side of side chicks and cycle of mess then this would be perfect. I promise it seemed as if Dominque and her Father went through the exact same mess.
Man...Cachet has done it again!!!! now to the fun stuff ...I can't stand Shanice & her trifling ass & I was sooooo happy when she finally got that ass tapped!! that whoopin was a long time coming!!! I also can't stand Dre&men that's like him. He really rubbed me the wrong way & I can't believe the foul mess he has going on. Looking at how the book ended I know there's a part 2 in the making & I for one can't wait....I would tell y'all why but I don't want to SPOIL it!! so Go ahead & 1click!
I gave the book 4 stars, due to all the grammatical errors, but baby, this storyline was off the chain. When it came to Shanice, she was grimy, just like NiChia had tried to tell Dominique. Dominique was naive, when it came to the things Shanice had been doing to her, and she was in fact a frenemy, and far from a best friend. There's no doubt in my mind, that what happens in the dark, comes to the light.
I loved that Kaleb knew what he wanted, which was the opposite of Dominique. Kaleb and Dominique both were in love with each other, but it was unfortunate that they loved other people, and didn't want to see their significant others hurt. It was completely unrealistic for the both of them to be together, and someone not get hurt. Once the skeletons are out of the closet, it will be a lot easier for Kaleb and Dominique to be together. The two of them, needed to stop playing, and finally put themselves first.
When it started off it was, slow but as I read on I couldn't put it down til the end I had a feel Nikki friend was going to be a snake. She is a dirty slut. I'm glad Nikki sister Mick that butt.. Now when I feel she should've gave kaleb a chance to explain himself, and she lied to him about being a Virgin and turn around and had a kid before marriage. Part 2 here I come
Bunch of cheaters... I thought this would be alright, it was okay if you're in between reads, just hated how the author didn't tell the story. This was more a recap of what these cheaters were doing then anything. The stuff in the beginning really didn't make much sense seeing as though none of them or what happened came up after that. Not in a rush for the next one.
I wish Nikki just leave that no good m-fr alone already and get with Kaleb. Shanice is a lowdown dirty dog right along wit Dre... I wish someone out them already dang...!!!
Cachet has did her thing yet again! The story pulled me in from the beginning. Dominique was your average teenager living a not so average life thanks to her trifling mother Monique. Dominique had to play mother and sister to her seven younger siblings on a daily basis while Monique did whatever it was that she felt like doing. She found peace with her boyfriend Kaleb who was head over heels for her but like any other teenage boy wanted sex and Dominique wasn't ready for that thanks to one of Monique's guy friends. Her best friend, Shanice, was a ghetto snake that for the life of her Dominique couldn't see. Shanice was jealous of her so called best friend and had to have whatever it was that Dominique had. This is a story that will have you side eyeing your so called friends but in the end is showing you how people really are. I can't wait to read part two to see how everything unfolds when all the truths start to surface.
This book is definitely a MUST-READ! Dominique really had a hard childhood. I felt so sorry for her. I'm glad she wasn't a pushover and she had a backbone when it came time for it. I know you're not supposed to fight your mother but that lady asked for it. She treated her so wrong then to have 6 more children was very irresponsible. I absolutely love Kaleb. Dre got exactly what he deserved! Karma is a b**CH! You don't cheat with someone's best friend and have 2 children by them! Peanut gave Shaniece exactly what she deserved! Sister knew something wasn't right with her. I would definitely recommend this book! This was my first read by this author but it won't be my last! Good job!
All I can say is, WOW!!! Cachet, you've done it again with another 5*****Banger. This book had me drawn in from beginning to end and I couldn't put it down. Total page-tuner and it gets better and better. This book has it all so much drama, twist and turns from childhood abuse, sex, love, deceit, jealousy and envy to the max. One thing is for sure be very careful whom you trust and call your friend, cause with a friends like this you need no enemies. Cachet, I can wait to see what you have unfolding for PT.2 , because this one went out with my MOUTH OPENED. I highly recommend this book and you definitely won't be disappointed. Job well done Cachet.
CACHET Is definitely bringing the heat .....This 5 Star read has everything your looking for a long loss love, scheming Azz Bestfriend. Dysfunctional mother... incarcerated father and secret kids... Come join Kaleb as he tries to get Dominique to stop playing and come on back to her true love while her fiance is out making a family with her hating azz best friend the characters are on point the STORYLINE is originally CREATIVE and the drama from the past will have on the edge of your seat.... I can't wait for the past to come bite Shanice in the azz ... OUT FREAKING STANDING .......
This was a great read. It is so much like what really happens in some of today's families with one parent being absent for whatever reason, and the other parent being abusive and mistreating the children. Dominiques story will touch your heart. Then there is the hurt by the one you love, and who is supposed to love you. And let's not forget the so called best friend who is envious and jealous of her. With a friend like that, who needs enemies. I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to part 2.
This book held my interest from beginning to end. I couldn't stand Monique for the way she treated Nikki. I don't condone in children hitting their parents but Monique had that coming. I love Kaleb's character he is the right man for Nikki. I hope everything works in their favor. Shanice is a conniving back stabbing tramp. I was so happy NiChia gave her the business. How could Shanice do that to her supposedly best friend. I hope Kaleb get a piece of Dre ole cheating lying tail. I can't wait to see what happens in pt.2 Great Job
Cachet you did that! This book was definitely a page turner. I'm glad that I waited to read it because now, I can hop right on over and start part 2. I am hoping that Dominique finds the strength to leave Deondre and, find happiness with Kaleb. I can't believe Shanice was as trifling as she was and, secretly jealous of Dominique. Shanice is not going to have any luck behind the things she did to Dominique and her sister. I can't wait until Shanice secrets are finally revealed. Now, I'm on to part 2.
This book has so much jealous, envy, pain, and all kinds of love in it. Dominique has been catching it since her father left her. No love from her mother. The only one person that loved her unintentionally hurt her due to a so call friend. She finds herself in a relationship with the first man that was nice to her knowing she wasn't happy but a child was there now.
Family Drama!!!! This one took a minute for me to get into, sooo I put it down then I picked it back up, that mama was a hot mess and poor Dominique I felt sorry for her. She didn't get to enjoy being a teenager doing anything she wanted to do cuz she was stuck being a "sister-mom" to her siblings and abused by dearest mommy!!! NOW I DONT CONDONE VIOLENCE BUT UMMMMMM ( Daddy did what he had to do )a gonna park this right here. The only joy she had was her love Kaleb until he broke her heart.
Oh we gonna start wit Shanice sneaky, backstabbing, conniving a**.... That beat down was needed and some. What I don't get is two babies, drugging people and not even satisfied wit the D. Deondre trilfing, community D, like it in the butt (yes gay) cus him and Pierri getting it, little D. I did care what y'all say..... Dominique so slow to her 'bestie' n fiance. I need her to wake up n whoop some a**. Can't wait Kaleb got a situation himself soooo.....
I can't wait for part 2, I can't believe Dre and Shaniece they some snakes and I am knew they was bumping. I know Shaniece was the one of spiked Kaleb's drink at the party and caused him and Dominique to break up. I don't wanna spoil the book but omg this was book was a straight banger. Cachet always brings the heat.
This book was off the chain! I can't believe how crazy Dominique's mom is and how she treats her. Kaleb is wrong for leading Tiera on but I hope he and Dominique end up together. I don't like Deondre cause he plays to many games and has too many women. Shaniece need to stop being jealous of Dominique and get her own man! Can't wait for book 2.
Excellent read. Wonderful, fast paced story line. The character everyone loves, and the character that everyone will love to hate. The author will keep your interest because you have to know what happens next. I would recommended who wants a love story with an edge to it.
OMG that damn Shanice is a pure BITCH, I'm so glad Peanut whipped that ass. now how Dre gonna get mad cause he caught Nikki when his ass been cheating the whole time and got 2 kids by Nikki so called bestie Shanice. I hope Kaleb and Nikki end up together happily ever after. Dre and Shanice belong together 2 trifling bitches. can't wait to read part 2
Very good read comprised of plenty of drama. The storyline immediately captured my attention as Dominique, Monique & their dysfunctional relationship was introduced. Monique was just plain evil! I hope Dominique & Kaleb make it...Looking forward to see what happens in the next part
Another great book by a wonderful writer I can go on and on about this book but I don't want to ruin anything. you have to read this and get the nexts one to you wont be disappointed
Aww I love this story. Dominique and Kaleb has a a good relationship. They didn't listen to outsiders! I wish I could have given it more stars. Don't sleep on this y'all
