Groundbreaking anthology bringing contemporary thinking about animation together with writings by and about important artists who use animation in various contexts. Essay collection.
Many things at once: nearly 20 years later, still a valuable document on the future of animation and animation's place in an increasingly digitized world. Also a historical document of the early 2000s that captures a certain viewpoint, both optimistic and trepidatious about technological innovations in a post-9/11 space. The essays here capture the early reaction against digitization as well, with the new wave of handmade animators of the moment. Structurally, the book is a bit odd, as the last 70 pages or so moving from critical essays to shorter precis on individual animators or works that are much less effective than the essays. Still, a great collection of writings.
