Making amends for his horrible past...betrayed by his employer...torn from the woman he loves...spy recruiter Chuck Brandt is down, but not out. Now he will have to recruit the only man alive that can help him - the man he used to be.
***
Nobody in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama knew who Chuck Brandt really was. All they knew was that he rented apartments to immigrants. What they didn’t know was that he was a recruiter of spies, that he was a legendary ex-assassin trying to start over and live honestly. His employer, a top secret government intelligence agency knew the truth. They should have known better than to target him. They should have left him alone.

Thriller writer Roger Weston has worked on various vessels at sea, from a commercial fishing boat in the Puget Sound and a salmon processing ship in the Gulf of Alaska to a yacht off the coast of Hawaii. He's taught writing and literature at several colleges and is presently hard at work on his next novel.

This is the first book in Chuck Brandt series. This is a fast paced action book from start to finish. I felt the ending was rushed and at times the story felt over the top with all the action. There are also gaps in the story that needed to be filled in.
Chuck Brandt is a Mack Bolan aka Executioner type of character. He is a former assassin who is trying to go good, he is working with immigrants trying to help them adjust. However he finds out he is being used for a sick game of research. When they take his girlfriend all bets are off. Its a bad ideal to play with an assassin's mind. His pain and wanting to get his girlfriend back is secondary since his former company is setting up a dangerous weapon that they will do anything to protect.
Highly recommended if you are a men's adventure fan. Brandt is a solid lead character and the action rarely slows down. There are some funny moments mixed in with all the mayhem to. Looking forward in continuing the series.
Move over Indiana Jones, Rambo and Jack Reacher - here comes Chuck Brandt, survivor extraordinaire! From the moment I started reading this wild, action packed Boy's Own adventure, I knew I had to finish it. In all his "blokey glory"the hero, Chuck, takes on an army of assassins and single-handedly disarms and kills them all - as you do.
The pace never slackens, and sometimes the action jumps around without explanation. I couldn't figure out why Chuck doesn't realise they have him covered with bugs in his truck or car - or perhaps its doesn't matter, but then why would he use a wide variety of disguises when he is seeking information? Chuck never seems to question why the crooks turn up everywhere he does. Got to be a reason! Likewise, one of his friends is killed, but there is no indication of how the baddies knew Chuck was even speaking to the man. These are the only weak spots I saw in this story.
The plot concerns a plan to force members of the American Government to vote for a massive defence budget, to the detriment of essential services. The senators are coerced into voting for the funding in a variety of ways - blackmail and their families being threatened are the least of it.
The head crook wants to set up a space station which will harness solar power direct from the sun and use this to control the world. The secret company for which Brandt once worked, has taken Chuck's lady and whisked her off to a mysterious place called Jin Mountain. The premise is simple - Chuck sets out to rescue her and nothing is going to stop him. Interwoven with the main plot is an experiment in seeing how far a man like Chuck Brandt can be stressed without breaking - but the worse the provocation gets, the slower Chuck's stress levels fall, to the consternation of the experimenter.
This is not a woman's book by any means, so all you men out there, download this one, you won't be sorry. However, I have to say that I enjoyed it, even though it felt as though I was clinging to a pole, strung out like a flag in a gale force wind all the way through!!!
I met Mr. Weston on Amazon's Discussion groups where he introduced his series of books.
This is a Mystery/Thriller involving Political Intrigue and Governmental Intelligence Agencies
Chuck Brandt has a past he'd just as soon forget. He wants peace and thought he found it in his new job. He has started his life over and has a wonderful girl friend. Chuck's former boss, Robert, thinks Chuck should come back into the fold. Robert's tricks turn ominous and when Chuck's girlfriend is kidnapped, Chuck does whatever it takes to get her back.
I love how Mr. Weston shows varied viewpoints. Chuck's quest for knowledge versus those that wish him not to succeed.
Warning: This book is for Mature Audiences due to graphic violence, Adult Language, and suggestive sexual situations.
First time reading this author. Found plot interesting and well developed. If you like action books about government black opts I think you will like this one.
This was a pretty good read! The characters had a lot of emotions and backstories but they were gapped from time to time. The chapters jumped from one location to another but were easily identifiable through location markers and the beginning of the chapters! I though it had an awesome main character with a desire to win good vs evil. Great secondary characters with a couple of good villains. I can recommend this one easily!
Packed with endless action, fight sequences, dead bodies, suspense, espionage, and a compelling storyline, Roger Weston has created what appears to be a very enjoyable start of a promising series. Our protagonist, Chuck Brandt, is reminiscent of several Jack characters: Jack Bauer from 24, Lee Child's Jack Reacher, and LT Ryan's Jack Noble. And throw in some non-Jacks with Mitch Rapp and Chuck Norris and that's pretty good company to be compared to! What makes Chuck a great protagonist is that there is also a brokenness to him as well as a thirst for redemption and this makes him interesting and compelling. Roger Weston does a great job from beginning to end with a complex storyline that never veers into boredom for the reader, even if some of the explanations went over my head. This is an edge of your seat thriller where people are getting shot at one minute, delivering punches to the head, boat chases, rock climbing, and many, many cool settings. I found the dialogue to be believable and I liked a lot of the secondary characters that I am sure we will see in books to follow. While there were some typos, I found they were not distracting or too numerous. I did want to warn that there was a lot of bad language throughout the book to appeal to a mainstream audience, though I think the book would have been fine without it. All in all, this was an exciting book and series that I feel will only get better the further you get into the series. Great job to Roger Weston on creating a great main character and action-packed adventure!
This book is almost non-stop action. It seemed like every page had someone that was getting shot, stabbed, beat to a pulp, blown up, or kidnapped.
Chuck the main character is an assassin. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? You could argue either side. I liked him. He pulls off some bad-ass moves.
I recently read that to have a successful thriller book you need to show your characters failings and continually ratchet up the misery while keeping the action increasing. Mr. Weston does that in spades with this book.
I had read the first half of this book then stopped. Not sure why. I must've had a brain freeze because when I picked it back up barley a chapter into it and my heart was pegged and sleep was going to be a long way off. I literally chewed through the rest of the book in four days. Two more that it should have taken but in my defense I went on vacation and it's hard to fish with a laptop in my hands.
This story has a lot of characters that form a troop of baddies and I won't spoil anything but a good time was not had by all.
The only thing I disliked about the book is that it leaves threads at the end for the continuation of the story. I personally do not like that. I prefer each book in a series to stand on it's own and have a clear ending. That is to take nothing away from this book because it delivers on so much that it wasn't one of the endings that causes you to groan with disbelief that the author ended it there.
Thriller fans will enjoy this book and it will be very interesting to see what Mr. Weston has in store for Chuck.
What a fun read! Action packed and compelling the story of Chuck Brandt grabs you on the first page and doesn't let you go until the last. I just had to keep reading.
While there are a few holes in this complex story, overall they just don't matter. Chuck, a world class assassin, has changed his ways only to find himself duped by his employer. He must rely on himself and the skills from his past to overcome the betrayal. And does he ever!
A real action-packed, hold on to your seat read. Enjoyed this novel and the hero that just kept coming back for more. The end felt a little rushed for me but I still enjoyed the book overall and would recommend it to any thrill-seeker.
It was a good book. If you like this genre it has all of the action and guns. I think the character interactions could have been more interesting and the plot been more developed
Right, I really wish the authors would give us a blurb instead of what others said about the book. This gets to be a very bad habit and does nothing to promote the book. I want to know what the book is about not a snippet or 50 from other readers. That said, the book was not bad. If you like the genre you will probably like this a lot. WaAr
I really had a hard time getting thru this book. The narration was so bad I nearly gave up.The story is violent but may be better than I think if the reading would have been consistent.I just couldn't follow with all the halting at every few words.
