Soul-Lights #1

Soul-lights

When thirteen students at a party hold a séance just for a laugh, they have no idea of the terrifying consequences, unleashing evil across the city.
By the end of the week, one of them will be dead, another as good as, and a third will have lost their soul. Their only hope is a probationary guardian angel, Thren, who’s been sent to look after them as a punishment for his bad attitude, and his prim and proper mentor, Tor. Time is running out for the students and only Thren can save them. The question is, will he want to/can he be bothered?
Soul-lights is a sparkling, darkly comic tale of angels and demons, students, warring clergy and the walking dead, set in the cathedral, university, zoo and historic city of Chester!

About the author

Fiona Angwin

9 books8 followers
Fiona Angwin currently works as a writer, an actor, a storyteller and puppeteer and a puppet builder. For variety she fits this creative streak into a working life which juggles these roles with being a zoologist, and a bat worker and occasionally a drama workshop leader and environmental educationalist! (How's that for a mixed job description?)
The phrase "jack of all trades, master of none" may apply. However, this (along with moving house a few months ago), may explain why she's only just about to write the next novel...a sequel to Soul-lights. She knows at least 5 people who are interested in reading it.....and is hoping that her lovely, and patient, publisher is still one of them. Plus writing the next book will give her the chance to ignore all the other work she should be doing, and just write. "Hurray"!

'A character driven story that draws you in and propels you through the well written story.'

Soul Lights is an urban fantasy novel set within the City of Chester and packed with angels, demons and a healthy dose of students for good measure. The plot itself is not particularly complex, but then from this character driven novel that's to be expected. It is the characters who grip you and carry you through the novel. From the very first pages the characters are set up to keep your attention, but more importantly to make you care. In that Angwin has succeeded in creating characters who feel thoroughly real if, at times, slightly idealised.

By the same token, it's often said that cities are important characters in stories. In the case of this engaging novel, the city of Chester is as featured and as flawed as the people who inhabit it. In the case of Soul Lights the author's understanding and portrayal of the city clearly comes from her familiarity with the area. There are scenes set in areas that almost feel like a love letter to places that the author knows. For some readers this may feel a little twee, but add to the identity of the novel.

The novel itself ticks along at a decent enough pace to have you turning the pages. It's not necessarily the novel you can't put down and the tempo does dip on occasions. With that said, Soul Lights has frequent flashes of comedy and anecdotes that push you through the slower moments.

All together Soul Lights is a colourful fantasy that will reward you for sticking with the varied cast of characters. Perhaps more importantly though, you are left wanting to know what happens after that last page.

If you're looking for an engaging novel to curl up on the sofa with and wile away a Sunday afternoon, Soul Lights is that novel.

I loved everything about this book - the characters, the storyline, the humour, the supernatural, the suspense! An added bonus was the fantastic setting - living near Chester I was able to imagine the characters going about their business in areas known to me. Just wish Fiona Angwin would hurry up and complete the sequel!
