After having read Chaim Eliav’s “In the Spider’s Web” and “The Envelope,” “The Mission” was a pleasant surprise. Unlike the other two, here the plot is more intricate and most of the characters are more developed. As with many of the books under the Shaar Press imprint, Eliav attempts to show the working of Divine Providence behind the scenes. He also portrays the all encompassing fear of Soviet citizens and visitors alike behind the Iron Curtain.
Yet the main protagonist, Jeff Handler, is extremely unlikeable. He is insubordinate to his boss, surly to his wife and a poor example of a religious Jew. But even he come through in the search for his grandfather’s tefillin in Moscow under the iron fist of the KGB. Other than the action-packed ending, the best part of the book is when Handler gives a class about tefillin to uneducated Refuseniks.
