James Lord was an American writer. He was the author of several books, including critically acclaimed biographies of the artists Alberto Giacometti and Pablo Picasso (with whom he became acquainted in Paris during his Army service in the Second World War).
I love reading prose by James Lord (see A Giacometti Portrait and Some Remarkable Men), but this wasn't quite as good as his other books (especially the last chapter, about his mother, which is rather self-indulgent). Still, the previous chapters (about exceptional women such as Gertrude Stein and Marie-Laure de Noailles) were worthwhile.
