I love reading prose by James Lord (see A Giacometti Portrait and Some Remarkable Men), but this wasn't quite as good as his other books (especially the last chapter, about his mother, which is rather self-indulgent). Still, the previous chapters (about exceptional women such as Gertrude Stein and Marie-Laure de Noailles) were worthwhile.
