Hmm. Thought I would like this more. Interesting approach to an old subject: this American wrote his book on French-American differences, IN French, for French people. He hit on all of the clichés that can be maddening or puzzling to North Americans, but he could have gone deeper, even in his light, fun style. As a Canadian, it was interesting to read his critique of France's laundry list of aids and subsidies - something Canada is constantly having to explain to its most important trading partner, the USA. What makes sense for a huge country like the States can't work for smaller countries like France (and Canada, which is big but unpopulated). I didn't think he addressed this very well, but maybe that's not important for what he was trying to achieve. Not sure, though. But yeah, it's a fun read, and I only picked it up after being subjected to a French person's cackles while they were reading it, so maybe there's something to be said for it.

I've read quite a few of these cross-cultural books, but this one is the first I've read in French for the French. I chuckled as I read it ("So true... Wow, isn't that the truth?...) but it also gave me ideas as to how I can explain 'us' to 'them'.

Made me really want to read Sacrés Américains as a follow up.

Comme étranger je trouve ce bouquin superbe. Un autochtone ne va pas aimer les critiques qui sont faites de son pays aimé mais il faut accepter qu'aucune nation n' est parfaite.
