I read this in one sitting to my 7YO. She loved it, as she’s loved every book by this author. McClung teaches so much via nature lore. It is a shame his books are so hard to find.
I read this with my two youngest for Nature Study over two days. They really enjoyed the story, but at the end one of them said, in his most 'you're a bad homeschool teacher voice', "What does THIS have to do with science?" So I asked him what he learned about hummingbirds from the book and he and his brother went on and on and on about Ruby Throat and everything they'd learned. At the end he got this sort of puzzled look and said, "Hmmm, it did teach us a lot but it was like a story." Score one for me!
This was a very sweet, interesting book and we learned a lot in a gentle story-like manner. After the book we looked up hummingbirds online and watched some videos, looked at pictures, etc. We have since bought several of his other books hoping for the same lovely learning experience.
