Hers was an unrivalled beauty, and she was a revered and respected advisor to her neighbours in times of trouble. Maurice Power was a man about whom little was known. I have been wanting to read this book for so long and I kept putting off buying it. I don’t know why, but I finally broke down and I bought the book and I have to say it was amazing. I’m confused as heck. I don’t know if I’ll ever understand what happened in this book but it’s so far from what I thought it was and it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise and I loved it. We sometimes have ideas and I guess a lot of curiosity about ghosts and what really happens to you when you die. Do we see ghosts? Are they real? And as a ghost, can you really do the things that Ellen Dower did or what she said she did and what Edward saw that night? Will we ever really know? These are the questions that go round and round in my head and like I said I’m still scratching my head from this book and that’s what made it such a good read for me so I give this book 5 stars because it made me want to keep reading. The author is brilliant I’ve read a few others of his books and this one just topped the book list for me. It is a definite recommend.
Wow Just Wow ! Really enjoyed this book Even tho at first I didn’t think it was going to be for me I did the cliche thing and judged it by its cover Was I ever wrong I really enjoyed this story It was amazing Couldn’t put it down What a story and what a ending Highly recommend
"Pilgrim does a good job at creating the atmosphere of the time and place and putting flesh and blood on what originally were anecdotal characters." -- Fate magazine
"The story, engaging as it is, is only one reason to read this wonderful novel. The politics of the early Newfoundland outport, the religious and folkloric beliefs of its seafaring people, the intricacies of the seal hunt, and the other details invest the story with remarkable realism." -- Canadian Book Review Annual
This book is an excellent example of what the folkloric beliefs of an outport seafaring community. Earl Pilgrim weaves this legend into a wonderful story, creating a piece of literary art! A must-read!
