In her challenging book, Jane Ussher sets out to unravel the contradictory visions of femininity. Images of naked women as sites of danger and desire are to be found in abundance in everyday life, in the form of art, film and advertising, for example. Yet girls are brought up to conform to the more traditional and passive norms, based on love and romance. Ussher argues that women have resisted and subverted these fantasies of femininity, so reframing the very boundaries of their sex, and creating a positive sexual identity of their own.

Jane M. Ussher is Professor of Women's Health Psychology, and leader of the Gender Culture and Health Research Unit: PsyHealth, at the University of Western Sydney, Australia. She has published widely on the construction and lived experience of health, in particular women's mental health, the reproductive body and sexuality. She is editor of the Routledge Women and Psychology book series and is author of a number of books, including The Psychology of the Female Body, Women's Madness: Misogyny or Mental Illness?, Fantasies of Femininity: Reframing the Boundaries of Sex, Managing the Monstrous Feminine: Regulating the Reproductive Body, and The Madness of Women: Myths and Experience . Encontrei esse livro por acaso em um sebo de Porto Alegre e achei que poderia me ajudar com as minhas pesquisas sobre identidade de gênero. Não poderia estar mais correto, embora o livro tenha sido lançado na década de 90. Quando comecei a ler o livro, o primeiro capítulo tratava sobre a representação da feminilidade nas revistas femininas, como Cosmopolitan e Teen, mas nos anos 2010, as revistas femininas estão em baixas, então esse capítulo me deixou meio desmotivado. Entretanto, o segundo capítulo, que trata do olhar (gaze) masculino sobre as mulheres nas artes e nos filmes é muito bom. A partir desse olhar, que a autora conceitua como falocêntrico, ela começa a explicar a cultura do estupro na nossa sociedade através da pornografia, das fantasias sexuais, de ciência e da lei, que dão ênfase aos capítulos seguintes. O livro é cheio de pesquisas quantitativas e qualitativas com Jane M. Ussher entrevistando muitas mulheres, homens, gays, lésbicas, trans e até estupradores. Então, ela chega finalmente ao capítulo final que tem o mesmo nome do subtítulo "reenquadrando as fronteiras do sexo", em que ela traça quatro categorias de representar a feminilidade na sociedade atual: being girl, doin girl, resisting girl e a performance da feminilidade. Por isso é um livro muito bom, que me fez aprender um monte de coisas que eu não sabia sobre sexo, sexualidade e gênero. E olha que eu já sei muita coisa. Também aprendi uma palavra nova em inglês e que a autora usa muito, que é Whilst, que significa enquanto. =P
