Jerry Ahern (born Jerome Morrell Ahern) was a science fiction and action novel author best known for his post apocalyptic survivalist series The Survivalist. The books in this series are heavy with descriptions of the weapons the protagonists use to survive and prosecute a seemingly never-ending war amongst the remnants of the superpowers from pre-apocalypse times.
Ahern was also a firearms writer, who published numerous articles in magazines such as Guns & Ammo, Handguns and Gun World.
Jerry Ahern passed away on July 24, 2012 after a long struggle with cancer.
Ahern also released books under pseudonym Axel Kilgore.
The best way for me to describe this book is if aliens from outer space abducted me and asked me to describe 1980's action-adventure literature. I would just give them this book and say that there are a whole lot better and a whole lot worse, but this is your stereotypical actioner of that age. It goes something like this....
A navy seal is on a plane that is hi-jacked by Islamic extremists in Europe. He smashes and fights off the terrorists and gets off the plane. Only the hi-jackers are pissed so they kill all 100+ hostages. Our hero drops out of society and starts to drink heavily for five years.
After those five years, our hero is in an all-night supermarket buying booze and a little food when, yep, the store is being robbed by hooded thugs with shotguns. A woman is killed and that sets him off. He hunts all the scum down and kills them all in cold blood.
Somehow, he is not charged. It seems that a secret group is being formed to attack some religious extremists where they live, and he is need. The Surgical Strike is a three-man team that is going to penetrate a system of caverns in the heart of Iran. They are joined by a hand full of freedom fighting Iranians though. So, about a dozen men and women against one thousand fanatics that are heavily armed. You just know they are going to win.
You have to suspend your disbelief so much and so often here. Also, one thing that brings this book down a notch, for me at least, is the descriptions of the weapons and what they do that the team uses. Yes, we need to know what they are firing, but damn, it is over the top. I can almost field strip a Walther PP L66A1 blindfolded.
