Rhymes relate the odd characteristics of creatures from American tall tales, such as the Gollywhopper with eggs weighing a ton and the Whiffle Bird that flies backward.
This book of rhyme uses inventive language to describe mythical monsters and crazy animals. Quentin Blake's simple and hilarious accompanying illustrations help the mind's eye to see inventive words come alive.
Audience: grades 3-4, independent readers: early fluent
Uses: Great for study of rhyme scheme and inventive language. This book would be a great work for style imitation by students, possibly writing their own stanzas with accompanying illustrations.
Additional notes: The poem is quite long and may be better appreciated in shorter clips. This book my seem dated to some, but still holds the power to bring chuckles to the reader and inspire use of inventive word language. No mention of the SES or cultural background of the inventive creatures. Illustrator is from Kent and grew up there during a time of war.
