Jill’s transformation into a dragon is not yet complete. Nobody, not even the brilliant Lieutenant Abby Danson, knows how much more Jill will grow, but a primal beast lurks within the dragon, one she may not be able to control.
The strike team of terminals has been set on a course which will begin to reveal the players in a much larger picture. The Red Event was not a random cosmic occurrence, but something done to the Earth for a purpose. All of the “lucky ones” may end up being pawns in a conflict between two ancient powers, while the rest of humanity become only victims.
Destiny is one of those powers, and she’s claimed Jill as her own. The strike team is about to discover that some mythology is actually fact. How much of the truth can they unravel before the real conflict begins? Destiny’s enemy has created a monstrous champion of its own—a champion capable of destroying all of them.
Including Jill.

14 books28 followersI was born in 1963. Started reading fantasy and science fiction with the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs when I was 7. As I grew I added more and more authors to my list, Isaac Asimov, E.E. Doc Smith, Tolkien, etc. Every book with a cover by Frank Frazetta was soon in my collection.
In high school I made friends who introduced me to Dungeons and Dragons, a brand new game at the time. Now I could both READ and PLAY out the adventures I loved so much.
A lot of my desire to write comes from playing dungeons and dragons and inventing worlds to play in since about 1978. My friends and I would sit around to ponder and question the mysteries of magic, dragons, and other planes of existence in fantasy worlds.
We came up with our own answers and those are at the core of my fantasy writing.

Of course I am listening to Senses Working Overtime by XTC while writing this review!
I believe I have just found the best super villain in a book!!!! Ugh!! The Balrog! So evil and terrifying and BA but in the wrong kind of way!! I can’t help but go out of sequence for this review because this new character is another amazing surprise from Thomas Cardin. I’ve explained before that he’s the kind of author who has a very close relationship to his characters, but it never occurred to me that he’d connect with such a villain!!! As a writer myself, I recently just experienced the emotional throes of being so connected to an extremely evil villain for the first time, so reading this second Terminals book cut pretty close to home for me because I could directly relate to Cardin between the lines.
So, the Balrog. No spoilers, but you will be terrified of him due to his “birth of a villain” origin. I had no idea what I was reading at the start of this second book until about the third chapter featuring this monster and I realized that I was witnessing the beginning of a horrific character and fell head over heels for the Balrog, who looks more or less like this:
Unlike Tolkien’s demon, Cardin reveals to the reader what it is like to be inside the mind of a sick bastard-turned-monster as well as the extent of his abilities with gruesome results. Let’s just say teleportation and heat go a long way when picking off your enemies. I really hope the Balrog remains to the very last book, because second-hand villains that are working for a master are usually more intimidating because we see them first hand despite the limitations of working under a boss’ boot. As much as I hate admitting it, the darker side of me admires the Balrog SO much I don’t want him to go out with the bang of the climax in the ultimate finale rather than the other option of being smudged out in the next book (that’s not confirmed, it’s just a theory).
Other than that, the plot gets much more intriguing in this second book because of further theorizing of who Destiny and Cronus are and Jill’s relation to the Balrog.
On to number 3.

The saga of Jill continues, and she becomes more magnificent with each episode. The characters are great, the action doesn't stop, and the story reads like a comic book (I mean that in the best possible way). Cardin has a kick-ass series here and I am going to start reading the next installment right...NOW!
