I found some new ideas and a few insights inside the covers of this book. The downside is the book is over ten years old and a lot of the business of marketing and distribution has changed since then. VHS... what's that? :) I wish I would have read this book prior to self-distributing 5 feature films about ten years ago. The book would have had more value to me then and been more current.
I am glad I read the book though. Always lots to learn and some different/new ways of looking at marketing a film, which I will put into practice on number six. I really, really appreciate the fact that the author truly understood what it does take, in time and resources, to self-distribute a project. The book did make me happy to know that someone in the world understands how much work and effort goes into the full process of marketing and distribution.
The sad truth is that film markets and film marketing differ from country to country - sometimes even from locale to locale. This book did not answer my questions as it would apply to my local distribution network.
What it DID do is to open up a lot of practical lessons and learnings with regard to making a film product marketable and, in some cases, how to make these available to an American (or Hollywood) marketplace.
As a source of marketing principles for film this is a very good book, then combine with practical realities from your own location.
