Novela epistolar donde un Sátiro, llamado Antifilos, manda una suerte de cartas -cada una de ella configura un capítulo- a un narratario que se puede interpretar como el propio Remy de Gourmont. En ellas da cuenta de su vida ancestral y su relación con las mujeres en un proceso de humanización que lo llevará a abandonar el campo, su estado natural, para vivir en la ciudad como un hombre civilizado. Así, se plantea aquí entre otras cosas el de la lucha interna de este ser representante de una fuerza primigenia de la naturaleza, y el conflicto con la moral burguesa del presente en su intento de adaptación.

Algunos pasajes como aquel del pintor renacentista Allegri ("La Fosca"), que dan cuenta de su pasión por la pintura, o el del poeta Mallarmé ("La siesta de un fauno") simpático homenaje al literato que bien conocía por las tertulias, son muestra interesante de un juego metaliterario.

Y aunque se trata esta de una obra menor del autor, su breve extensión -puede leerse del tirón en pocas horas-, la hace perfecta para combatir alguna jornada de hastío, sin más pretensiones que la del puro divertimento, ¿o no?
