Marie Gilzean, accused of murdering her own father, finds herself cast into a stinking cell deep within the walls of Edinburgh’s notorious Tolbooth. With enemies on every side, she turns to the one man who is prepared to find the truth, and save her from the grim gallows awaiting her on the Grassmarket. Robert Young of Newbiggin. Working side by side with Captain Travers and Edinburgh’s Town Guard, it soon becomes clear that the dead man took a perverse pleasure in making more enemies than friends. With no shortage of possible suspects, Robert must dig through the dirt and false leads, in a search to bring the truth out into the light and see the guilty brought to justice.
Born in 1966 and raised on the east coast of Scotland in the ancient Pictish Kingdom of Fife. Married to a wonderful woman for 19 years and we have been blessed with a beautiful daughter. I really have to say thank-you to my wife for allowing me to spend so much time in the 18th Century when there are jobs in the 21st Century probably requiring my attention!
I have always been fascinated by the history of Edinburgh and have spend most of my adult life studying Scottish history in all its aspects but always find myself being drawn back to the cobbled streets of the Old Town.
I would urge all visitors to Scotland's ancient capital to (briefly) venture into one of the narrow closes/alleys running off from the Royal Mile to get a flavour of how alive with mischief, mayhem, love and laughter these streets once were.
I was lucky enough to be selected as a beta reader for Jezebel's Chains by author, Stuart S. Laing. Jezebel's Chains is a gripping mystery set in 18th century Edinburgh, Scotland. Number 7 in the Robert Young of Newbiggin Mysteries, Jezebel's Chains tells the tale of Marie Gilzean and her attempt to clear her name of being accused of killing her father. The author brings the reader to 18th century Scotland with ease and knows his subject well. The flavor the the times, the speech of the people, and the customs of the day are wonderfully woven into the story.
Marie is not the only person with a reason to want to do away with her father so there is a wide array of secondary characters, with Robert Young and family prominently featured as Robert goes about proving Marie's innocence. Each character is well written as is the main character of Marie. A fabulous who done it that keeps one guessing till the end, I greatly enjoyed this book and the others of the series that I have read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an intriguing murder mystery set in a fantastically written time period. Having visited Edinburgh in 20009 and 2010, I enjoy reading this series and getting the flavor of how the city was in the 1700's.
I will be reading the rest in the series and any more books that Stuart S. Laing writes.
