I'm not sure how to rank this book. Personally it was a light weight, fun read. These Anne E. Schraff mysteries are targeted for reluctanct readers (high interest/lo level), and as such they hit the nail on the head. The small size and the fact that it only has 100 pages should get reluctant readers excited right away. And the actual story isn't too bad either.

The book that I read was called bird in a cage by Anne Schraff. I liked this book a lot because it was very mysterious, and creepy. It also had a huge plot twist. The author made us believe one thing and then near the end of the book changes it to a whole nother thing. One thing that I liked about the book is that there was always some type of adventure that kept you on edge, and that made you want to read more. The one thing that I didn’t like about the book is that it was not that long, and I wish there was more to it. It ended in a way that I didn’t expect for it to end. So I wish I knew what happened after the end of the book. The main setting of this book was at school, and at Clint’s house. Also the main characters were Clint and Melina. The conflict is that Melina goes to United States but is from a different country. When she leaves her country she is being chased by an assassin that her father hired to bring her back to her country so that he can get her dead mother’s money from her will. This novel connects to the unit theme because it is mysterious, and because if you put yourself in Melina’s spot you can only imagine how scared and afraid she might be. I would recommend this book to people of all ages that like action, mystery, or even crime type of books.

My book is bird in a cage. It's about this girl named Melina who is scared because a man is watching her . Clint found her hiding behind his truck . He offered to take her home she said yes . He took her home and then the next day they went to class together and then they started talking then the next day they got closer. As they got closer and closer she told Clint why she was scared and why the man was watching her . Then Clint was worried about her so he told his parents about what she had told him . Then later they found out the man that was watching her had died . I think teens will enjoy this book and read it because it's a mystery book.

Anne Schraff writes great books for reluctant readers and this is no exception. Middle schoolers who love the Bluford Series will enjoy this quick, suspenseful read.
