Projections of Memory: Romanticism, Modernism, and the Aesthetics of Film

Rate this book
Projections of Memory is an exploration of a body of innovative cinematic works that utilize their extraordinary scope to construct monuments to the imagination that promise profound transformations of vision, selfhood, and experience. This form of cinema acts as a nexus through which currents from the other arts can interpenetrate. By examining the strategies of these projects in relation to one another and to the larger historical forces that shape them--tracing the shifts and permutations of their forms and aspirations-- Projections of Memory remaps film history around some of its most ambitious achievements and helps to clarify the stakes of cinema as a twentieth-century art form.

Great book! Was supposed to read it for Richard’s class - but instead read it for fun over the Summer. Makes a lot of interesting connections. I do wish he went a bit deeper on some areas, as sometimes I feel like he was kind of just skimming the surface of these films. I would’ve liked a really serious shot for shot breakdown of a scene of a film. Also, could’ve defined what romanticism means to him a bit better - the whole book is based on the relation between film and romanticism, but it seems that Suchenski has a different approach to the definition of romanticism than what is generally accepted. Also would’ve liked more deeper analysis of painting as well! Still good though, taking a class essentially about this book with Richard this upcoming semester.

4/5 Good, don’t know if I would recommend it unless you’re deeply interested in this sort of thing.
