My 5 year old son is crazy about dinosaurs. I ordered this book through our interlibrary loan system because I thought it might be fun to read a vintage dinosaur book. This book was so cute and he just loved it, especially the yellow (his favorite color) and other vibrant illustrations. I feel like this book was the inspiration for the Never Touch a Dinosaur board book. We especially liked that this book listed dinosaurs that aren't well known/popular dinosaurs now. I highly recommend this book to kids who like dinosaurs.

We read a lot of dinosaur books and Julia is more knowledgeable about the subject in general than most adults. We're always impressed when we find a dino book that introduces some of the lesser known dinos. Most children's books will feature the usual, the Triceratops, T-Rex, Stegasaurus, etc.
If I Rode a Dinosaur is about a little boy who daydreams about riding different dinos. He mentions going to the Museum of Natural History so any kid who loves dinos and has been there will relate to that trip.
Each dinosaur that the little boy dreams of riding has its own feature that is useful to the boy (or others) also.
The Trachodon (not very well known) would be great for Halloween in a number of ways. The Diplodocus (fairly well known I'd say) would be useful for his length by being a kind of bridge over the river. The Monoclonius (even we'd never heard of this guy) would be awesome for birthday parties. And so on.
The book will make kids - and adults - laugh and while the illustrations are very dated (this was published in 1974) Julia didn't seem to mind at all. In the realm of children's dino books this is old but it also has a very different feel to it. Julia and I both enjoyed it very much.
