What is wrong with us Greeks?: Trying to explain the Greek phenomenon

Rate this book
For many reasons, Greece has an outstanding position in the world. However, the country that gave birth to the greatest of all civilizations, constituting a unique phenomenon in antiquity, has reached today a level of such a degradation that it justifiably draws international attention and makes people wonder: What is wrong with those Greeks? What happened and they are considered a negatively unique phenomenon in the western world today? Of course, these and other similar questions are not coming out of the blue. Over the past few years, Greece has been going through an unprecedented economic and social crisis, which turned her into the most problematic member of the European Union and the Eurozone. The famous Grexit has repeatedly come to the fore during the crisis period.
Who and what is to blame for that? This critical question, which is in the lips of many foreign researchers and observers, has long been haunting the mind of the author George Nicolaidis, a retired ambassador of Greece, who has experienced many of the Greek particularities from the inside. His experiences led him to the decision to tackle the “Greek problem” in all its dimensions: the deficient political system, the seriously sick economy, the state’ bankruptcy, bureaucracy, corruption, populism, statism. These and other ailments have created a volatile situation, which often risks going out control. The country is dragging its feet and appears to be in a state of stagnation, with the society deeply affected by the developments. But the society itself has a significant share of responsibility in the current state of affairs. It is a spoiled and greedy society, lacking in discipline and common sense. Individualism and egotism have the upper hand within it.
Is there any explanation for the overall messy conditions prevailing in modern Greece? The author believes that he has the answers, which he expounds in the second part of his book; answers that shed light on what has caused the Greeks to rise and decline. Going through them, readers will come to realize that what the “Greek phenomenon” is about is rather easily explainable.
