Emma never dreamed of being a super-sleuth. In her mind’s eye, she’s more Scooby Doo than Nancy Drew. When her nosy neighbor, Mrs. Perkins, drags her to an anniversary party to solve a mystery, Emma rolls her eyes, buys a box of chocolates and hops in the car.
What’s a party without an attack on its host—or more accurately on the host’s grandson, sparking an allergic reaction and moving the party to the hospital waiting room. Now, everyone is suspect. Emma and Mrs. Perkins, along with Great-Aunt Alice (a spirit with boundary issues who keeps stepping into Emma’s body like a new dress and playing matchmaker), dive into an investigation that almost gets Emma killed along with the man they are trying to protect.
With too many reasons to kill him and so much to be gained if he died, Emma and Mrs. Perkins must unravel the tenuous ties that point to every member of his family as potential killers.
Anna Simpson lives near the Canadian-US border with her family. Even though she's lived in several places in British Columbia, her free spirit wasn't able to settle down until she moved back to her hometown.
She is easy to find though, if you know the magic word -- emaginette. Do an internet search using it and you'll see what I mean. :-)
White Light is an intriguing cozy mystery with an unusual set of detectives. Emma is a young woman who may or may not have psychic powers. She's been in and out of mental hospitals her whole life and wants nothing more than to live quietly and hold onto her fragile sense of peace. She's just moved into the house left to her by her Great-Aunt Alice, a well-known psychic who recently passed away.
Next door, lives nosy neighbor, Mrs. Perkins, an elderly woman who was also Aunt Alice's best friend. She and Emma strike up a friendship and keep an eye on each other, since each lives alone. The arrangement works fine until Aunt Alice's ghost starts taking over Emma's body to communicate her suspicion that an unknown man is about to be murdered.
Ever with a nose for trouble, Mrs. Perkins jumps right in to investigating the mystery of who the soon-to-be-murdered victim might be and drags Emma along with her. If Mrs. Perkins, Emma, and Aunt Alice can figure out who it is, they might be able to prevent the tragedy and save a life. But with multiple possibilities and many suspects, they've got their work cut out for them.
I enjoyed the story and liked how the author kept me guessing with some unexpected plot twists. I loved the opening scene. It drew me right in. The main characters were interesting and likeable (mostly). Mrs. Perkins is one of those well-meaning busybodies you can like but who can drive you nuts at the same time. I really liked Emma and felt for her as she tried to remain calm and in control while dealing with Mrs. Perkins' and Aunt Alice's antics.
I wasn't so keen on Aunt Alice with her body snatching ways, and I was glad Emma was able to assert herself enough to keep charge of her own body. Since the story is told in first person, present tense, Emma's blackouts disconcert the reader as much as they do her. But it was great seeing Emma gain confidence and make friends and start to break out of her lonely shell. I also liked Tom, Emma's inadvertent boyfriend (thanks to Aunt Alice). He seemed like a nice guy.
To anyone who likes cozy mysteries, I'd say give White Light a try. It's an enjoyable read that left me looking forward to more by this author.

White Light by Anna Simpson is a cozy mystical mystery set in the North, somewhere along the U.S./Canadian border in the little town of Ravenglass Lake. Emma, the main character, is a young 20-something who has recently inherited her Great Aunt Alice's house...and her best friend Mrs. Millie Perkins. Aunt Alice has some unfinished business to take care of, and she uses her great-niece's gift for connecting with the spirits to help her. Emma isn't always happy about Aunt Alice's meddling, but it does spark a romance. Aunt Alice and Millie are back together trying to solve the mystery of Alice's murder, and trying to prevent another one. Emma is dealing with trying to fit into a new community, build relationships, and understanding her gift. This is a great beach read with mystical elements. Simpson creates colorful characters, intriguing plot, and with her use of dialogue keeps the story moving along. (I have a character interview on my website, Play off the Page.)
White Light by Anna Simpson is a fun cozy with unique and quirky characters that kept me laughing at their antics as the mystery grows. We have plenty of suspects, colorful characters and the beginnings of a romance.
The writing kept me caught between the serious and the comical and I enjoyed being there. Anna Simpson’s ability to bring the words to life through her descriptive writing could make me feel as if I was there, sharing some of Emma’s experiences, feeling what she felt. I had my thoughts of who did what, but Anna did not let me know the answers too soon. Great job keeping me waffling back and forth.

White Light: A Mystery Novel introduces us to Emma, a millennial who has formed a friendship with her quirky but lovable neighbor, Mrs. Perkins. Emma is living in her deceased aunt's house, but her aunt isn't quite gone. Thanks to her aunt's meddling, Emma finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery. You can't help but smile at the interactions between Emma and her neighbor, but the book isn't short on suspense, either. An all around great read!
This was my first cozy mystery. Emma is a young woman with some psychic abilities and a troubled past, who inherits her great-aunt's house and her great-aunt's best friend Mrs. Perkins. They live in the small town of Ravenglass Lake, full of quirky denizens and several mysteries.
At first, I was kind of confused, but that actually clears up once you understand more about Emma. The mystery was intriguing, as was the town and its people. What a bunch of characters!
White Light is a sweet little mystery. We can't help but love Emma, the MC who's life is rudely interrupted by her late aunt. My only comment would be that I had a difficult time following the dialogue.
Welcome to Ravenglass. A small town about to make big news.
But first, some fun. Emma and Mrs. Perkins are neighbors and friends. They live kind of isolated so are always watching out for each other. When Emma returns home and finds Mrs. Perkins door ajar, she senses trouble. And she finds it when she discovers her friend bound and gagged. What comes next will surprise you and make you eager to read more.
And what’s a cozy without a murder, or at least an attempted one ? There are plenty of suspects to choose from when a man is poisoned, taken down by his well known food allergy.
Being a writer of murder mysteries, Emma is in her element. She gets to work searching for clues. In a small town, where everyone knows each others business, she’ll need to be delicate.
This is where I really came to like Emma. She’s had a tough life. In and out of mental hospitals, you’d think she wouldn’t trust herself with so many things working against her, but she does.
Her Great Aunt Alice, who died but who’s spirit still lingers, complicates things further by stepping into Emma’s body at whim and spicing up her life with some sparks of romance. What’s a girl to do?
There’s lots to laugh at and some serious business to draw you deeper into the story. Anna does a good job of keeping you off balance and then smoothing things out. She keeps you on your toes and engaged.
I hope you get a chance to read White Light. I enjoyed it and hope the author gives us more about the town and these characters.
White Light is an easy to read and entertaining mystery novel that will only take you a couple of days, or less, to read. It's well written and the plot is quite solid.
Emma has always been afraid of telling people her secret and wants nothing more than living a normal life, so when her neighbor asks for help to solve a mystery she is wary of being involved. However, the noisy spirit of her Great-Aunt will drag her not only into solving the mystery but also into a relationship she wasn't expecting.
The characters are good, each one has a defined personality and most women are super funny. The scenes flow naturally and the mystery is well built. I liked the paranormal element with the body-snatching spirit.
Overall, it's a good book and a good choice for those who like mysteries.

This was a lighthearted read with likable characters, some who were bent on having fun, which lead to some trouble. The mystery was engaging with a few twists and turns and yes, surprises. I got a kick out of Emma. What would you do if an elderly aunt's ghost kept taking over your body without your permission? Read it and see how Emma handled it. The sidekick in it, made me think of the sidekick in the Puzzle Lady series.
