No other history book about Jamaica will take you so deep to the heart of the action! Modern writing and the extensive quotes from ancient writers perfectly complement each other. This book will take you on a voyage through time. From the arrival of Columbus, to the taverns of Port Royal, to the runaway slaves who defeated the English to the slaves' rebellions and everyday life.
THE FIRST HISTORY OF JAMAICA WRITTEN BY A FRENCH and to be published in France since 1751! Get ready for a journey to the West Indies, where the New World was born...
I would call this book a decent recap of Jamaica's colonial history, although I can't stop thinking about how much of this colonial history was about the colonists themselves. I think the narrative didn't explore enough when it comes to records of resistance to atrocities committed by white people, then again, I am also conscious of the fact that there may not be that many historical accounts of what I was initially looking for. Either way, I think the work itself may serve as a good introduction to the historic of the Island but it should most definitely not be one's only source of knowledge. There are a few interesting titles mentioned in the footnotes and I'll be treating this book not as an encyclopedia but rather a guide to future readings and I encourage other readers to do the same.
