[ The 4th and Final Billy Rucker mystery ]
blurb - There is someone on the streets of London who will stop at nothing to make a point... As she walks home from work one night, Josephine Thomas is brutally attacked and left to bleed to death. Billy Rucker had known her, briefly, and he soon hears about the tragedy. At the request of Jo's distraught colleague, he agrees to look into the murder. As he begins his tentative enquiries, things move horrifically close to home. A friend of Billy's is found dead, and in the throes if what seems to be a crazy nightmare, Billy must bury his grief and tackle his most dangerous investigation yet. But something else is concerning Billy - are these murders horrible coincidences, or is Billy somehow the connection between them? And if this is the case, will he be the next target, or is the killer working to a far greater plan: a ceaseless vendetta that will send Billy's world spinning irrevocably out of control...
PROTAGONIST: PI Billy Rucker SETTING: London SERIES: #4 of 4 RATING: 3.0 WHY: Billy Rucker is a PI specializing in finding missing young adults. He never reunites them with his client; instead, he provides pictorial evidence of their existence. That way, he won't inadvertently put the youngster back in an intolerable situation. A woman is murdered near his office; soon others are endangered as well. At first the connection seems to be the building where he has his office. To his horror he soon finds that HE is the connection. It turns out there's a serial killer who is killing pregnant women and removing the fetus. As you might imagine, this is a very dark book. That didn't put me off as much as the fact that he and people he knows, even marginally, become the targets. I loved the first 2 books in this series; the 3rd less so and this one not much at all. I felt baron lost control of the narrative.
c2004: Angstful is probably the best way to describe this book. Again, the coincidences/choices make the plot slightly off kilter and the hero has grown but in a way that didn't bring this reader much joy. Not sure if I would read another one in this series. For this reason, unable to recommend to the normal crew.
**update** just found out that I won't have a choice about reading the next one - there is no next one. Sorted!
This the fifth book in the Billy Rucker series and is an excellent private eye read. In these books you get a great feel for the glitzy and gritty London and the feeling that all the characters are people you know in your day to day life. It’s a really excellent down to earth deceive/who done it novel.
If I say pretty much anything, I would give a lot away. It was a good whodunit, something to occupy my mind while I was working, but for some reason I just felt kind of "eh" about it. I listened to this, and I did really like the narrator. That was the best thing about it though.
