During WWII Herbert M Youngdahl was an Infantry Platoon Sergeant in the 133rd Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, Iowa National Guard. He served with the Division throughout the African Campaign, up to the boot of Italy, and north of Rome. The Division set the WWII record of over 500 days in battle and Youngdahl served out most of that time with the Division. In his heartfelt book, Youngdahl shares many real life experiences of his platoon. This is not a gory dissertation but an insider's view of what our troops went through in far away places.
There is no narrative here, no characters inhabit this book, there is no plot and no history.
This is a random collection of answers to the question "What did you do in the war, grampa?" The book is divided into chapters or sections, each with an entry in the table of contents and none of them as long as a page. They're in no particular order, with events from World War II mixed in with the Korean War, with some tidbits from service in late-50's Europe thrown in for good measure.
There are a surprising number of photographs included, so in a way this is much more like a scrapbook than anything else.
