Catalogue of the Aksumite Coins in the British Museum

The coinage minted during the reign of King Aksum of northern Ethiopia, is very rare. However, the British Museum now holds more than 600 coins, dating between the 3rd and 7th centuries AD. This collection is described and illustrated here for the first time. The coinage provides vital clues to the nature of this ill-understood kingdom and its history.
