The highest, and some of the most challenging peaks in the world are those of the Himalayan Mountains. Among these is 25,294-foot Mt Jannu in Eastern Nepal. At the time of the New Zealand attempt on its north face in late 1975, Jannu had been climbed only twice, in both cases by its southern route. The New Zealand Expedition's goal was the top by way of the bitterly cold northern exposure, a first Himalayan north face ascent - a route that on Jannu includes 10,000 vertical feet of rock buttresses and ice bulges. The key to it is an awesome 2,000 feet of ice-plastered rock - the "Wall of Shadows".
