A thoughtful work of literary criticism on Soviet fiction (not of the samizdat type) published in the years since Stalin's death. Some good observations on the common themes and tropes of the Socialist Realism school of writing and the ways in which Soviet authors subverted or deconstructed them. Would have hoped to see more female and/or non-Russian authors included in this analysis, but it may simply have been a matter of availability. Regardless, a well-written book from a fine historian of Russia and the Soviet Union.
