I have read most of Charles Swindoll's books, and I read this one precisely because I wanted to be influenced by the same writers that influenced him. To be honest, I enjoyed his discussions more than the original writing.

This is an absolutely fantastic idea. Pastor Swindoll gives you excerpts from eight of the books that have been most influential in his life. It is, first and foremost, a great way to get exposed to books and to get some good ideas for what you might like to read next. It is also interesting to see the role that books can play in our life and to learn a little bit more about Charles Swindoll in the process. I loved the first chapter in the book because of the story that went with it about how God used Jim Elliott's life to renew his commitment. However, I was disappointed in the introductions to most of the other chapters because there wasn't much of a personal story that went with them. I still enjoyed reading the book excerpts though, especially Charles Spurgeon's chapter on the minister's fainting fits. I wish more Christian pastors and authors would follow this idea! It's like a sampler platter of reading!

I loved it. Chuck Swindoll has a gift, and I enjoy him very much. This book was unique to me because it was a great way to get a taste (sort of a sampler) of the authors that have influenced him substantially over the years. The book also has an important message at the end concerning the value and reasons for reading regularly.
