Against her family's wishes, Mississippi-born black filmmaker Lorraine Barbette breaks off her loveless engagement and travels to Senegal to shoot the documentary of her dreams, only to find herself pleasantly distracted by a handsome diplomat. Reprint.
I am really trying to finish this book, but so far I find the story boring. I am half way through with it and so far all I have gotten is a history lesson. There is no real conversation between Lorraine and Momar except when he is telling her the history of his land. I don't feel any real chemistry between the characters and I am real close to putting the book down and saying forget it. If I want a history lesson I will pick up a History book. Even the secondary characters are boring, dull and uninteresting. I'm giving this story 2 stars out of generosity because I haven't finished it yet. I am on page 143 and I'm still waiting for the story to take off, but right now it is a very dull read. It keeps putting me to sleep, at least I will be well rested when I finish it, if I decide to finish it. I seriously doubt that I will ever buy another book by this author, because I am truly not feeling this story. It is taking me 3 days to read this book when I can usually finish 244 pages in a day. I am determined to try to finish it, but so far its pure torture. I will definitely be selling this book to the Half Priced book store, which is unusual for me because I have more than 500 books in my collection. I wish I could get all my money back, but at least I will get something.
