Lola was born in the oldest house in Melbourne's CBD. Her grandfather bought it as a shop cum house in 1899 and her family have lived in it and supplied food from this tiny cottage ever since.
Her family memories go back to the earliest days of Melbourne and describe an era that was slower and kinder. Her own history includes being the first person to produce a Samuel Beckett play in Australia, and appearing in the first Australian movie to win a prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Her life as an actor and teacher are described with great hilarity and insight. This is Lola's first book - she is 94.

City Kid by Lola Russell is a fantastic read! I found it hard to put down. Lola's charming and witty style is delightful. For a history buff, it is full of eye-witness accounts of early white-settled Melbourne. Tales of cows being driven to the docks or up to market on what is now one of Melbourne's busiest thoroughfares, church picnics, community sing-alongs - all these vignettes depict a city that has largely vanished. Lola's acting and teaching careers are told with hilarity and insight. Remarkable memoirs from a memorable lady!
