The book is written from the perspective of the Russian Orthodox Church and concentrates on its gradual submission to the state. This submission, which turned the Church into a part of state bureaucracy, discredited it, according to the authors, in the eyes of the population. Thus, while the political regime collapsed, the Church collapsed as well.
The book is highly informative and constitutes a useful overview of the Church's institutional history.
