I must start by saying I love Mr. Phelps' Derek Cole books. While this may have had the paranormal touch, it wasn't a pretty Derek Cole case that was wrapped up neatly at the end.
This book is darker, more thought provoking and really makes you question everyone and everything in it. I hate spoilers, so I'm going to try to be careful here not to give anything away.
The main character, Trevor, or Mac as some call him, is really well developed. We hear his part of the story from him, so we get to hear his inner thoughts, which I always like. It gives us a better understanding of who he is. Which is a guitar playing dude who hopes to make it big while he brings in a paycheck as a substitute teacher. That changes pretty quickly as he falls down the rabbit hole.
The other characters are also very well done, extremely relatable, even the bad guys. The thing with good vs bad is always who determines what is good and what is bad? Sometimes it's obvious. Sometimes it's not.
This book left me thinking about it long after I finished reading it. That is always an indicator to me of a really good, solid, thought provoking book. If I forget it after I read it, it was just feel-good fluff. It's the one that stays with you that really has the power to adjust your way of thinking. Mr. Phelps has accomplished this here, I believe.
This is going to be a series to watch. The potential is way up there and I believe Mr. Phelps has what it takes to deliver it. I definitely recommend this book, and I recommend you follow him as well. This series in particular is going to be worth the wait.
I gave this book the 3 star reading because it kept my interest and had a lot of twist and turns. I would recommend this book to other readers who enjoy horror or thrillers.
