The ability to choose is a powerful thing. With every choice made The Light of Wills grows more radiant, protecting the sanctity of choice. Elizabeth's parents had been The Keepers of that power. They were the protectors of individual will, until a clandestine enemy discovered a way to corrupt it. Her parents bestowed The Light of Wills, a weight heavier than the world, into her newborn heart years ago. With a fight ahead, facing an already victorious foe, Elizabeth must learn of her heritage. Against unprecedented tempests, she must learn what it means to be a Keeper.
When it comes to young adult fantasy, Navarro nailed it! The Keeper's Light was fantastically magical from beginning to end! The characters were well developed and introduced to readers in a brilliant way. I love how she started it with Elizabeth as a typical farm girl enjoying life as she knows it when the action packed mystery starts. I was drawn in from the beginning; only to find myself unable to put it down throughout the entire book.
The Keeper's Light has mystery, suspense, action; rivalry, and romance; and twists that will make you say “Whhhaaattt?”
Elizabeth’s parents were the keepers of The Light of Willis, which protects the sacredness of choice; they granted the power of the light to their only newborn daughter right before their untimely death. She was sent away from her would be rivals with appointed protectors, whom she knows as family and friends. She lives her life happily as an average little girl until her rival discovers her. This is where the story begins.
I can’t say much more without spoilers so I will just say, this is a HUGE 5 Boundless star book and I HIGHLY recommend it....Beth
The beginning of this book sucked me in. Once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. One of the things that I can say for sure, is the author writes well and that is always a huge plus for me.
You have a girl, Elizabeth, who grows up in the forest with her two 'uncles' (or so she thinks). She feels ordinary and has an ordinary life, but she is very far from ordinary. She is shocked into the truth that she is the daughter of the late king and queen and she is a "Keeper of Light". They gave all their power to her when she was born as they knew they were going to be destroyed. This is all very new for her and they embark back to their 'kingdom' to try and take it back from the evil Kaleb.
And what kind of book would it be without some type of love story? Enters Nicholas who is the handsome older love interest that promised to take care of Elizabeth when he was just five years old and she was a baby. I was thinking that when she met Henry, there might be a love triangle, but alas, there was not (bummer - sometimes those are fun!) Nicholas loves her and has watched her grow up. Now they embark on a journey together to take back or claim her rightful place.
It has been a while since I have really sat down and read an entire book. This felt like a good choice to break back into reading. It was easy to feel immersed in the world that the author has created and feel engaged by and invested in the characters and their story.
This book is absolutely, top-notch amazing! It is so good that I have read it multiple times. One thing I love the most about this book is the relationship between choice and consequences! I'm also loving the fact that there is NOT a love triangle. I hate love triangles, it causes more problems then is necessary, so that fact that the love triangle is avoided makes it another reason it's one of my favorite books. Definitely recommended for any age! A very family friendly book that is enjoyable for anybody with an imagination! Enjoy your time reading it because you won't put it down and you'll finish before you want to!
This book is excellent! This book is a page turner. The author had made the characters come alive to me. I felt like I was part of the book the entire time. I didn't want to put the book down. I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I suggest reading this book for yourself! You won't regret it!
So far this book has been fantastic and enjoying to read! I have just started and I love how detailed, and truly fun it is to read. I'm very picky with what I read but this fits the bill out of all the books I have previously read. I can't wait to finish and hopefully see a second book coming soon.
This is an intriguing story with several twists along the way. Elizabeth and Nicholas's story plays out in an interesting yet believable fashion. Of note there is no love triangle, which has been an overused plot device in my opinion. The story is also cleanly written in a way that will appeal to readers of all ages. Recommended.
The Light of Wills protects the most important aspect of humanity: choice. In turn, it is guarded by The Keepers, a lineage of kings and queens who pass the sacred duty from generation to generation. The Light of Wills is so powerful it must always be guarded by two individuals, a husband and wife. But when King Aldric and Queen Everlyn’s land is beset by the evil Kaleb, they are forced to transfer the Light into Elizabeth, their newborn daughter, and send her away to hide in safety in a land across the sea. Without the help of the previous generation, how will Elizabeth learn the secrets of her power and rescue the land of her birth from Kaleb? The plot of the story is typical of the genre but also contains a few twists which I didn’t see coming. Obviously written for a younger audience, it still managed to hold my attention through the young life and development of Elizabeth as she learns about her heritage and the power which resides inside her. The perspective of the story is well thought out, keeping the reader confined to what Elizabeth knows and little else. Though this builds a certain amount of frustration as the reader tries to understand her back story as well as the extent and limitations of her powers, it serves to restrict the story to a measured pace as the full stage for this saga is set. Though some secrets are kept from Elizabeth for silly reasons, obviously just to build suspense and spread the introduction to the story over an entire volume, it ultimately works to maintain interest in the coming story. "The Keeper’s Light" is at its weakest in the realm of writing mechanics. Sentence structure can be weak or unclear, occasionally requiring a second pass to fully comprehend. Additionally, the author tries to draw parallels which don’t ring true and leaves the reader wondering what exactly she is trying to convey. Finally, though the vocabulary of the volume is extensive and varied, unsuitable words are occasionally used seemingly with the sole purpose of varying the vocabulary at the expense of clarity. Though the above issues are relatively few and scattered throughout the text, they had an annoying habit of pulling me out of the story, just when I was starting to get engrossed. Character development in this book is one-sided. Set as a fairytale of sorts, the one-dimensional caricature of evil shown in Kaleb works. Council members, villagers, and other characters are also somewhat stagnant in their development with personalities declared up front and remaining unchanging throughout the duration of the book. These personalities tend to tie into the stage and setting of the story making them feel realistic if not a bit wooden. Despite light treatment of peripheral individuals, the main characters are developed more intentionally. Dispositions are vibrant, unique, and more vivacious than the rest. Though the fast-paced plot disallows a significant amount of development, it is employed where possible to fairly good effect. "The Keeper’s Light" is an interesting and engaging story which starts out slowly but quickly builds momentum until the final pages. The plot is generally well paced, dwelling on things it should while simultaneously keeping the pace quick; although, major plot points which should carry great weight are occasionally glossed over in just a few sentences. The writing mechanics of the book are mostly solid, though scattered instances of improper word usage and poor sentence structure made it difficult for me to lose myself in the story. Finally, given the plethora of characters, their development is handled well, touching on those who are important to the plot while allowing peripheral characters to stay on the periphery. Plot is often the hardest aspect of writing, yet it is the strongest area of this book, and with just a bit of work in the areas of writing mechanics and character development, the next book in this series could be better than okay: it could be fantastic.
I really enjoyed reading this! I really enjoyed the story about being able to choose for ourselves & the consequences of our choices. I loved the loyalty the characters had for their duties as well as their hearts. I was surprised along the way as the story progressed, and wanted to keep reading to see what happened next. I am excited to read Navarro's next book!
Note: I exchanged a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.
From its tense, fast-paced opening to the cliffhanger conclusion, The Keeper's Light is the first in a series of fantasy novels that explores the power of light and darkness. Though the theme is common in fantasy, the way it is used is not.
Elizabeth, our heroine, was taken away and hidden just after her birth. Her parents endowed her the power of the Light of Wills just before their death and entrusted her to close friends. The threat? A man called Kaleb whose motives (other than his desire for conquest) are unknown until the end of the novel.
Elizabeth grows up in relative peace and security, until the time comes for her to return to Beldom. On the journey, she experiments with her power for the first time as well as finding out what has been kept from her.
Back in Beldom, things are not going smoothly. There is obvious corruption on the Council and the Boundary, which keeps the people safe from Kaleb and his darklings, is weakening.
This fantasy novel would appeal most, I think, to young adult readers - particularly those who enjoy a healthy dose of romance, too. Navarro's world-building is solid and the characters are well-rounded, Cedric and Maurice being my favourite. Things seem a little bit too easy for Elizabeth in the beginning, but the use of her powers become more believable later on, especially when it is shown how much of a physical drain they are on her.
The plot ticks along well and the action scenes towards the end are gripping, particularly the conclusion. I turned the page expecting to see another battle - but I'll have to wait for the next book for that.

This story does begin in a very classic fantasy, hero-is-born type of way, but I’d still give the start an A +: it dropped me right at the beginning of the important part and even managed to hit me in the feels a few good times before the prologue ended. Chapter one on, the plot keeps up its tense and exciting feel, but unfortunately, I found some of it a little confusing. The passage of time, for instance: I was never really sure how much time had passed in between most scenes, and that just made it kinda hard to stay grounded in the story, because I’d think they were in the next day, only to find out it was like two months later. So, while I did like it, little issues like that kept jarring me out of the narrative, which kept me from enjoying the story as much as I otherwise could have.

My family read this book and loved the book. When I asked them what the book was about they told me to read it but I probably wouldn't like this book. It wasn't "my type". So I was hesitate to read it . It was AWESOME!!! I could not put it down and when I was done with it, I wanted the second book to be done. It was thought provoking for older readers. Young readers this book is a CLEAN book. So parents, lyou don't have to worry about language , bad scenes, or such. A very very enjoyable book
Interesting story of a girl who is a keeper of light and her quest to find her kingdom and her own true love in spite of the evil dark lord. Enjoyable read, and my granddaughter's favorite all time novel. Thanks for the recommendation.
Great first book from a new author. Kept me intrigued right until the very end. Lots of twists and turns and especially loved the love story. :-) Looking forward to the sequel!
