Rate this book
St Mary's Church, near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, is one of the most famous Anglo-Saxon churches in the country, incorporating much of a complete Anglo-Saxon building, with a complex pre-Conquest history of additions and alteration. This heavily illustrated book is a full report on recent work at Deerhurst, involving documentary research, structural analysis of the fabric of St Mary's, excavations both within and adjacent to the church, as well as in nearby fields, and a survey of the parish. The new evidence presented here provides a fresh understanding of the Roman background and the Anglo-Saxon monastic estate which developed from it; in particular, the excavations have yielded much data on the church itself, with important implications for its dating. PHILIP RAHTZ is Emeritus Professor of Archaeology, University of York; LORNA WATTS is a freelance archaeologist; HAROLD TAYLOR is the author (with Joan Taylor) of the 3-vol. Anglo-Saxon Architecture; LAWRENCE BUTLER is Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, University of York.Other contributors: F. ALDSWORTH, M. ASTON, S. BASSETT, D. CHARLESWORTH, H. CLEERE, A. CROWTHER, R.
