Determined to help their school board candidate beat his hateful opponent, Kate Bennett and Drew Meyer have the campaign threatened by Drew's kidnapping and a cold-blooded killer who has lethal plans for both of them. Original.
actual page number: 213 pages I had a hard time choosing between 3 or 4 while rating this book. After thinking, I decided to go for 4 stars. This is a really good mystery thriller that kept me reading the book without stopping.
The book both stars Kate, who tries to find information of Drew's kidnapper and his whereabouts and Drew who's kept hostage in the basement in a remote location where he must use his mind to figure out how to escape. Personally, I prefer Kate's part as I thought the "mystery" part was a bit intriguing for me. In addition, Kate have to go through uncomfortable situations like meeting Drew's family, confronting her stern but cold father while investigating, actually getting a visit from her political opponent, and even visit school at night where the wrong kind of teenagers go. It's these situations that make the book quite tense for me as Kate struggles facing her obstacles. However, the drawback is that there's no action in her part but the tense moments make up for it
Drew's story is the "action" part of the book. The interesting things is perhaps the banter with Drew and his kidnapper like Drew's insults to the kidnapper or the fact the kidnapper wants Drew to recite some poem(?), Drew's coping of his location, and Drew finding ways of escaping which provides the most suspense. I like this part also but not as much as Kate's part because it can be tedious as there are some boring parts where no action occurs.
The horror is really minimal. Kate isn't targeted for attacks when she investigates and Drew's part while brutal from the pain and the conditions he goes through but it isn't scary.
The twist is meh. I mean there could be those who will be shocked from it but for me who like reads a bunch of thrillers, not surprised by it. Perhaps it’s from the fact that there’s not that much suspects so it’s easy to pinpoint the one who did it.
The main characters are… interesting. Drew is the type of guy who’s considered to be the loser in YA books. He play computer games, good student, gets bullied, and is fat. Naturally, he’s the guy that the readers feel sorry for being in bad situation. However, he does make wisecracks and throw insults to his kidnapper which I think it’s awesome for him but it’s pretty risky and stupid for him to do so as he can be beaten for it. Overall, he’s okay.
Kate is the more interesting character though. I didn’t like her at first because she seems to be pushy type of character when she forces Drew to do something or react angrily at those who support her opponent. However, as the story progress, her character reveals more to it. Kate is the girl who feels that she’s busy all the time. She wish she can relax but can’t and always have some anxiety over something that she refused to talk to someone about it because she fears she might get teased. Her father appears to be strict or cold to her that their relationship appear to be distant. Although Kate usually gets mad or make him do work, she actually does love Drew but can’t seem to express her love to Drew because her scheduled life makes it hard to express her love.
Kate really gains points for being an interesting character. Her shyness results from the fact her mind’s focus on academics that she may not know much about social activities and her father could be another factor of her not knowing affection. The lengths she goes to find Drew really shows the dedication as she also have to face obstacles she fear which makes her character strong. Not really too complex, but at least her character have a little bit of three dimension and her dedication makes her likable.
Overall, the book’s great but if you want to read a book that have more horror elements, probably skip this. If you want to read thrillers in general, this is the type of book you should get and read.
