My Water-Cure: Tested for More Than 35 Years and Published for the Cure of Diseases and the Preservation of Health

Excerpt from My Tested for More Than 35 Years and Published for the Cure of Diseases and the Preservation of Health

Being a priest, the salvation of immortal souls is the first object for which I wish to live and to die. During the last 30 or 40 years, however, the care for mortal bodies has absorbed a considerable portion of my time and my strength. This work I have never sought after; on the contrary every patient coming to me is (naturally speaking) a burden to me. Only the thought of Him who came down from Heaven to heal all our infirmities, and the remembrance of His "Blessed are the merciful; for they will obtain mercy," - "Even a cup of cold water given in My name shall not be unrewarded," was able to detain me from refusing every petition, no matter who the petitioner might be. The temptation to do so was the more natural, because not profit, but incalculable loss of time, not honour, but often calumny and persecution, not gratitude, but in many cases ingratitude, scorn and insults, were my reward. But God allowed it to be so, and I shall not complain of it. It is easy to be understood that after such precedences I feel not much inclined to write, especially now that I am feeling the oppression of old age, and both mind and body long for rest.

Definitely did not read cover to cover but I did find the best part of this book in the Apotheca section where Kneipp says Fuck Big Pharma;

“Among all the things I abhor and hate, the proprietary drugs—the trading with remedies which are kept secret by their inventors—hold a prominent place.”

Lolllllllllllllll tell ‘em, Seb.

Fascinating reading, and quite topical, given the contemporary cold shower/wild swimming movements. I significantly benefited myself from a water treatment prescribed by an excellent and renowned naturopath some years ago,

I wanted to know more about Kneipp's work, having very much enjoyed the Kneipp trails while walking in Austria, particularly at Scheffau at the bottom of the Wilderkaiser mountains in the Tyrol, where you can walk barefoot on a variety of materials, sit in an open air lodge where fresh spring water runs down cut pine branches, and plunge your legs and arms into basins of ice-cold water - very invigorating and enlivening!

There's more to his teaching than just the water cure so I'll hope to read his ideas next on balance in all things.
